Lahiff would concern me. Always looks a liability, gives away a
lot of penalties both in the scrum and in the loose. Nothing
special, and Bath aren't letting him go by accident. Equally,
his salary demands would likely be higher than reasonable, given
his ability is little better than someone from the Championship
or a young up-and-comer.
Agree with those saying the Horwill and Earle situations,
especially the latter, will not have been in the plan. It's a
shame to see so many top class second rows (de Jager, Attwood,
Green) slip past us but there will always be options out there,
and we should have cash to burn. Ditto on the wing. Does anyone
know what happened to Napolioni Nalaga? Joined London Irish but
got injured very soon and was out for the season, but I don't
think he played at all this year either. With Naholo joining, I
imagine he's not much in their plans but he'd fit the bill for
me, based on his historical Clermont performances.
I personally do think we need a top class fly-half if we want to
challenge for honours right now. Marcus will be that player for
the next decade, but he's still a year or two away. If we're
willing to wait, battle for top six and maybe a cup semi, that's
ok. But look at the impact Cipriani made at Gloucester. The
Beauden Barrett wildcard... We can keep dreaming!

Earle’s replacement has to be of similar standard or lower (I
believe) so you couldn’t spend the £400k on tempting Reko Ioane
over for a few months.

This would be spot on. These are the types of players we need to
be attracting.
Add to that a serious beastly international second row and a
gnarly, good value backup tighthead and I can pass on a fly half
for next season. Although I'd take Barrett or Cooper in a
heartbeat if they're on offer. My only question if we did sign
Quade... who takes kicks at goal when he's on the pitch? From
what I remember he's not too great from the tee.

Yep. The tighthead can be a back up. Saracens took a chance on
Christian Judge and he earned himself a move to Bath. Never
going to set the world alight, but more than capable of holding
his own at this level. Someone like that would do fine.
Another 10 would be a nice to have but the investment really
needs to go in to a lock and a wing good enough to be first
choice.

We (along with Sarries) tried to sign a prop from Ealing. Seems
he opted for Falcons instead as he was worried about getting
game time.

Yes. I meant that the wing replacement does not have to come
from the cap, so we should still have a decent amount even if we
replace Earle.

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more tbh - I often wonder
about some players' decision-making when signing for teams where
it's obvious they're going to be 3rd choice at best. I guess it
often does just come down to earning the best crust you can with
less of a care about how many minutes you're likely to clock up
on the pitch in meaningful competitions. Which is fair enough
really - just surprised more players that would end up 3rd/4th
choice at the likes of Quins/Saints/Glaws don't try and work
their way up by initially signing for those promotion/relegation
clubs (Newcastle, Irish, Worcester) who have similar budgets but
can also offer more game time and therefore exposure.
