We all get bent out of shape if our Son isn't selected for
club/school/academy teams......but imagine waking up knowing he
has just been crowned European Player of the Year and STILL not
needed by his country???? Just weird!!!!!

       Well....
I am not sure about 'crowning', but as I understand it, he was
voted 'Player of the Year' by the players. Is that right?
Do you think players are the best judges of selection?
Do you think players make the best managers, or Directors of
Rugby? Not necessarily, I say. I will point you toward Martin
       Johnson.
       I rest my case.

Rarely convinces when he does play which is odd as he’s clearly
talented. I do find, like Cipriani that anything he does well is
praised to the hilt more than most players though.

Ashton (a player who has cut it for England sometimes unlike
Goode) also had an amazing European season. But...
Club rugby and international rugby remain different.
Yes some players get overlooked their whole careers, others are
looked at by successive coaches who decide they don’t have that
       extra ingredient.

Goode has never solved the problems that led to his exile from
       international rugby to begin with.
Is he a better defender now? Er, no - watch his flapping at
Kearney for the break that led to Leinster's first try. He's
very soft in defence. Sarries carry it because they need what he
       brings in attack.
Does he still make unforced errors? Yes. He'll still randomly
pass the ball into touch or knock it on in the tackle because
       he's not paying attention.
Is he better in the air? Well, he was actually excellent in the
air yesterday, but largely this remains a big problem for him.
Does his running game work against the best defences? It didn't
yesterday, but it's obviously hard to tell when he can't play
       against international teams.
Essentially, what he does well was less easy for him to do at
international level, and what he does badly became a real
liability. I've not seen anything to suggest much has changed,
       talented though he is.

Would rather see Watson playing FB for England myself.

Watson's been really average for England at fullback. World
class winger, but just hasn't turned it on and has made a bunch
       of big errors instead.
It's weird how the England 15 shirt has operated, aside from
       Mike Brown. It's cursed.

European Player of the Year is a flawed concept. The shortlist
is made up of players playing in teams that have made it to the
knock-out stages of the Champions Cup only. You could have a
player playing out of his skin, a hybrid McCaw/Carter who stood
out miles above everyone else in terms of performances, but if
they don't play for one of the eight teams that make it through
to the Champions Cup KO stages, then they're not even
considered. It's quite easy to see a situation where that
players' team is playing in the Challenge Cup due to a poor
performance domestically the season before (when they might not
even have been at the club), but they're tearing up trees all
over the place. Look at Clermont for example. They slipped down
to the Challenge Cup because of their domestic issues last
       season.

FTR I don't want him anywhere the No 15 England shirt! I was in
Ireland when he fluffed his lines to let Ireland score! Just
wondered what his parents are thinking!

The award starts with a shortlist of 15 nominees whittled down
to five by a combination of the public vote and the selections
of a respected panel of judges (Bryan Habana, Chris Jones,
Matthieu Lartot, Emmanuel Massicard, Brian O’Driscoll and
Dimitri Yachvili). No idea how the winners is chosen unless also
       by public vote.
When you look at the last English winners (since 2013):-
       Jonny Wilkinson - Toulon, 2013
       Steffon Armitage - Toulon, 2014
       Nick Abendanon - Clermont, 2015
       Maro Itoje - Saracens, 2016
       Owen Farrell - Saracens, 2017
       Alex Goode - Saracens, 2019
..they were either outcasts in France (ok, Wilko not an outcast
       - he'd retired) or Sarries players - Goode is both. It's almost
like someone feels sorry for them that they didn't get the
respect/England caps they deserved, especially Abendanon,
       Armitage and Goode.
