       Fourth or seventh?

So we are still in with a shot at 4th if we win and Saints
don’t. And fifth or sixth still look likely, which is fantastic
given where we ended last season. But lose without a point and
depending on other results we could be seventh, which would be a
shame (if Sale win in two weeks time and we lose we’d be level
on points but below them on games won).

For me the most fascinating thing is that all of those options
       feel genuinely possible.

No matter what the outcome this season has been a lot better,
Quins still are in with a shout if fourth and how many people
would have predicted that at the start of the season, I think
most thought 6th would be a great a achievement well I certainly
did. With the players coming in next season promises to be
       exciting.

Interestingly 7th this year could still see us in the Champions
       Cup:
"In accordance with a decision of the EPCR Board comprising the
nine unions, federations and league bodies, the 20th place in
the Heineken Champions Cup will be determined as follows:
       i) Heineken Champions Cup winner, if not already qualified
ii) Challenge Cup winner, if not already qualified
iii) Challenge Cup losing finalist, if not already qualified
iv) Play-off match between the losing Challenge Cup
       semi-finalists, if not already qualified
       v) Highest ranked non-qualified club by virtue of league
position from the same league as the Heineken Champions Cup
       winner"

       Surely top 6 is confirmed.
Sale could equal Quins 55 points but with a vastly inferior For
v Against, Wasps could get 57 points but, even if they did,
Quins would drop to 6th and Sale to 7th.
       Or am I missing something?

We need to keep it in our own hands. A win is essential and
bonus point win would give us a great chance of fourth.
Saints are certainly capable of beating Exeter (particularly
given the relative form of the two sides. I’d expect Exeter to
want to bounce back ahead of the play-offs though.

I might be wrong, but I think it's number of overall wins that
determines ranking rather than points for and against. There is
a scenario in which Wasps get max points, Saints and Sale win
and we get pushed into seventh on fewer wins. (He said, with
more certainty than he felt) To avoid this scenario I think we
would need at least a losing bonus point against Wasps.

Sale are a threat if Gloucester rest players, which is entirely
possible given that their play-off place is already confirmed.
I’d be extremely disappointed if we get nothing from Wasps
though. They’ve looked pretty poor this season and we know we
have it all to play for. 4 points should be minimum requirement,
but 1 would probably cement top 6.

These are the rules, as explained on the Premiership site...
  HTML https://www.premiershiprugby.com/league-tables/gallagher-premiership-league-table/
       --- Quote ---
       > In the case of equality at any stage of the Season, positions
at that stage of the season shall be determined firstly by the
number of wins achieved and then on the basis of match points
differential. A Club with a larger number of wins shall be
placed higher than a Club with the same number of league points
       but fewer wins.
       >
       > If Clubs have equal league points and equal number of wins
then a Club with a larger difference between match points “for”
and match points “against” shall be placed higher in the
Premiership League than a Club with a smaller difference between
match points “for” and match points “against”.
       >
       > Should two Clubs have the same number of league points and the
same match points difference, the Club having scored more match
points “for” shall be placed higher in the Premiership League
than the Club having the lesser number of match points “for”.
       >
       > If the above does not establish different Premiership League
positions then the Club in the higher position shall be the Club
that has achieved the higher aggregate match points scored by it
in the same season against the other Club.
       >
       > If this still does not establish the position then the Club
who has won the most matches, excluding its first Premiership
League match of the season, then its second Premiership League
match and so on, until it can be established which the higher
       placed Club is.
       >
       --- End Quote ---
       So it comes down to:
       - Number of wins
       - Points Difference
       - Points For
       - Aggregate Score between the clubs in question
       - Number of wins excluding the table toppers, 2nd, 3rd, etc...

Given we (Sale) got a BP win at Kingsholm, if (massive I’d) we
manage to make it click, we should be a threat even if
       Gloucester don’t rest players.
