If we can land Snyman then I think he’d be the signing of the
summer- still only 24 I think.

Snyman would be the sort of character we need to replace
Horwill. Proper tough combative type of lock.

What percentage of Prem locks will be South African by the time
we tip over the Global Warming point-of-no-return? Is there a
cause-and-effect link between the two? Those guys certainly
leave a big footprint - 6'9"ers must be size 12+.

I can't see him not making the squad though. He's developing
into a top class lock, and the present set of Etzebeth, de Jager
and Mostert can't cover every game, plus they've had a few nasty
injuries between them. Du Toit covers lock, but is much more
effective in the back row. I'd say Snyman will be right in the
mix.

Could not agree more with the fact that Robson and Kohn have not
been replaced. Both offered a lot in terms of aggression which
we have just not had since and from our locks and were good ball
carriers. I think some of the lineout issues have also been
compounded by our hookers.

Agreed on the impact that Robson and Kohn had, and the trouble
we've had replacing them. But let's remember: neither of them
were "top class international" locks. Kohn was on the verge of
the scrapheap when we brought him in, and they ended their
careers with the grand total of one cap between them, won as a
replacement when Wales were so low on fit players that I was
half expecting a call up myself.
Big names are nice to have for marketing purposes, but often the
best players to have are the ones who are just below
international level. Our 2011-2012 team was stacked with those -
albeit several of them broke into the England squad over the
course of that season.

Alex Shaw tweeted about our record with academy 2nd rows. I'll
try to find the tweet. Stuff we all know, but saying it's
unfortunate that we let Kruis and Launchbury go early (I didn't
know Kruis was with us) and since then other England u20s in
South, Matthews, Twomey and Treadwell have all left, either
because they never fulfilled their promise (South, Twomey and
arguably Matthews) or in the case of Treadwell, just left to try
for higher honours.
We all know that letting Launchbury go was arguably the right
call at the time.
Matthews was probably not going to improve any further with us
and is hardly ripping up trees at Wasps.
Treadwell we had no choice.
South hasn't looked like pushing for regular starts.
Out of all of them I'd say that Twomey is one I'd like us to
have kept a bit longer. He looked really promising before
injury. He doesn't seem to be starting for Irish which surprises
me.
He didn't mention Okafor. I'm not sure if we released him or he
asked to be released to further his studies. Seemed a shame
though as he looked promising as well
