And this bewilders me. With the players we have, it should be
one of the best.
Sinks, Marler, Elia/Crumpton - three internationals and one
excellent non-international (yet).
Horwill, Symonds - ex-Australia captain and one of our best
players this season.
Robshaw, Clifford, Domrandt - ex-England captain, England squad
player and junior World Cup winner, another player who could be
our star of the season.
I guess the sum of the parts is greater than the whole?
Much as this may not please people, I think that the one person
who could have turned that pack into a real force would be JK.

I've often wondered about the hype around Adam Jones. Great
tighthead as a player - you could argue one of the all-time
greats - but why does that automatically make him an excellent
coach? Yes, he knows what it's like to be in there but that
alone isn't enough. He always strikes me as quite a softly
spoken guy - not much of a natural communicator. I just wonder
if he's really actually qualified for the role?! Martin Johnson
was one of the all-time great international captains... Couldn't
hack it in the coaching arena. Obviously I've never seen Adam
Jones' training sessions but if we're going by performance, he's
simply not doing a good enough job with the players he has!
Codling's having a tough time too. At the start of the season I
thought Tofty was going to be the weak link - thought he'd gone
a bit stale. Our attack has been largely clinical so hats off to
him and NEv. The set piece guys need to be working all hours now
if we want a chance at a Prem Final this year - which I'm sure
is the aspiration, even if most of us feel it's a season or two
too soon for that to be realistic.

Yep. With the players we have, our scrum should not be one of
the weakest in the league.
Our lineout is getting there (at least when Crumpton plays) but
the scrum needs some real focus.

I may be wrong but I think I saw a graphic at the weened that
the 11th best scrum is Exeter. My take is that the margins are
so fine that this ranking of scrums is largely meaningless.
Nobody ever ranks the backline!

Defensive pressure creates mistake and ramps up the fear factor
when the team applying the pressure then gets a good attack
going. Symons' yellow was due to a dangerous Sale attack.
Several of our penalties were due to Sale's in-your-face
defence. Quins were never comfortable.

I thought Symons was a little unlucky with the penalty he gave
when we were pressuring their try line. Faf went to throw the
ball but didn’t, borderline dummy, and Symonds went for it.
Clever move by Faf, got them out of trouble. The other penalty
where he was pinned in by their players and ours was a little
harsh but wazza said he had his hands on it but I didn’t see
that. Both the Robshaw twins gave away a penalty each but
nobody’s mentioned that. I still don’t know how most penalties
are given away in the scrum but their loose head was much more
popular with Wayne than naughty Kyle. I thought that when there
was a scrum on their 5m from our knock on that they definitely
pushed early but they still got the penalty. The commentators
are always saying that you need to make a significant effort to
roll away but sometimes you get pinned in, probably on purpose.
It was interesting to hear that referees don’t like us on
another thread. Has this got anything to do with our high pen
count.

JammyGit - clearly we were watching a different game.
Honestly you are making it sound as though Sale dominated us
from start to finish. I don’t dispute we were well beaten in the
scrum, but I honestly thought we looked fairly comfortable
against a very average attacking performance from Sale (I’ve
definitely seen them play a lot better).
I just re-watched the Symons yellow on the extended highlights
on BT Sport and I would not class that attack as dangerous. It’s
a stupid, lazy, obvious penalty from Symons. It might have been
more forgivable if he’d been trying to stop a try scoring
opportunity, but it really wasn’t (it’s at about 14mins in to
the extended highlights if you want to check). ;)
What’s even worse is watching some of the previous penalty
decisions that actually cost us points. Just so unnecessary in
most cases.
They were:
3 - middle of the pitch about 35m out. Robshaw goes too
ambitious on the steal and gets pinged.
6 - Sinckler. Scrum penalty 25m out in front of the posts.
9 - not shown - I seem to remember it was very similar to the
previous one.
12 - Sinckler late hit on Faf about 35m out in front of the
posts.
22 - Crumpton. Seatbelt tackle on van Rnesburg. 35m out wide
left.
25 - lazy offside. 35m our in front of the posts.
28 - Symons. Not rolling away. 20m in front of the posts.
So, as I was saying, most of them were giveaways with most of
them more or less within range In front of the posts. Mindless.

In other words:
3 - Robshaw feels the need to slow down play. Commentators call
it "a good penalty to give away" or such due to Quins being in
trouble if he doesn't do it.
12 - Attempt to slow Sale's attack down by getting to FdK
28 - Attempt to slow an attack down in a dangerous position
after Sale had just been on their own tryline.
Offside generally come from being desperate to get off the mark,
too.
None of this stuff happens in a vacuum, a comfortable defence
doesn't give these away.
