result on paper and say I must be an idiot (Or you could just
say it anyway) but i cant really recall them looking like
scoring without our gift wrapped presents. Early up, I sat back
and thought "Lovely little WBP" here. I thought we looked that
comfortable. Then the discipline started to go to pot and any
attacking threat we had went (Partly because we could not spend
any decent time in there 22 without giving them an easy out).
       >
       > I think in general our game is in good order. Our scrum, with
the players we have needs to be better. Our LO with Crumpton is
solid. Attack wise we look dangerous and have tries in us.
Defensively we look solid and tough to break down. Problem for
me (And what PG and the coaches should be drumming into us) is
discipline. We put our defence under unnecessary pressure and
do not allow our attack a chance to pressure the oppo.

good place and that can be worked on, or you could say that we
have enough experienced players, captains etc that we shuold be
able to work on this and why is it a continued issue.

All of this is true. But ultimately the game is about taking the
chances on offer. The fact that we gave Sale too many is the
key. Fair play to them, they took those chances. We've also won
games where in all honesty we shouldn't have. Our focus should
now be on not giving chances - whether that's tightening up
discipline, keeping concentration, or just not making stupid
       mistakes.
We've improved a lot in many areas, and it's still a work in
progress. The season overall suggests that we're on the right
       track. Taking Saturday as a one-off paints a worrying picture;
taking it into the context of the whole season, we're not in a
       bad place.

"Gifting" points is frequently what happens against an
aggressive defence. Saracens made successful seasons out of that
       approach.

Yes, but how many of Sale’s points came from ‘aggressive
       defence’?
I make it 7 for the converted try and that’s it ...
They didn’t ‘take their chances’ because they made no chances.
They took points because of our ridiculous lack of discipline.
Fair play to them for that, but they did very little to earn
       them.
Apart from the intercept, ALL of their remaining points came
from dumb penalties. Mostly from scrums or when they were going
nowhere in attack but we were too obvious in illegally slowing
       the ball.
The worst example was where Symons had 3 consecutive penalties
against him culminating in his yellow card. IIRC, the first was
an offside when he was over eager in pressuring them on their
goal line coasting is about 40m. The second was a side entry
(more cheap metres) and the third was playing the ball on the
deck when he was literally lying down in front of Barnes to
offer an easy 3 points. I should add that I’ve got no issue with
Barnes’ decisions almost all of the penalties we have were
       obvious and stupid.
I’m always happy to credit the opposition for good play, but I
saw very little from Sale to suggest they would have won if we
hadn’t handed it to them on a silver platter.

Penalties from scrums are a result of pressure. Symons' yellow
card was a result of pressure. Others were a result of pressure.
We don't play in a vacuum - remember how we used to fall apart
and give away ball and penalties to Saracens? Same thing.

Our scrum is ranked 10th in the league so it’s currently a point
of weakness. It’s a strength for Sale, so I’ll go along with
       that.
On Symons, I don’t agree. The first penalty was him trying to
pressure them and then I think the second and third were him
trying to do too much to rectify the first error.
Sale created nothing all night so I don’t know what pressure
       you’re referring to?

Er, we lost due to the forced errors/penalties/sin bins we made,
which Sale contributed to. C'est pression! They may have scored
their only try via an interception, but we still had plenty of
defending to do, not all of it due to our inability to keep the
ball legally but because we lost it at the breakdown or when
       ever we hd a scrum.
Did you not notice those beastly Sale forwards owning our front
       row? Not pressure?
       Pah!

I’m not talking about the scrum.
I genuinely don’t think they put us under a great deal of
pressure in open play. I don’t recall our defence being
stretched or them making any dangerous line breaks even when we
       were down to 14 (twice).
As I said in an earlier post, I don’t have a problem with
Barnes’ decisions, barring the intercept (which cost us 3
points) and I also thought he was quite generous allowing our
       second try.
I am, however, questioning how many penalties came from genuine
Sale pressure vs. our players just making dumb decisions.
Anyway ... nothing we can do about it now, but I really do hope
we’re working on our discipline. That defeat was so avoidable.

I'm inclined to agree with Quinston. We put MUCH more pressure
on ourselves than Sale put on us. They were well and truly there
for the taking. We completely lost our heads. So frustrating,
but to be expected in Gussy's first season I guess. I'm not
wishing this season away but I am really excited for 2019/20.
