Leicester's international stars "should not abandon ship" and
could still play for England in the event of relegation, says
RFU boss Nigel Melville.
The Tigers are 10th in the Premiership table, five points above
bottom side Newcastle, with five rounds to play.
A number of England's leading players, including Ben Youngs and
Manu Tuilagi, are on Leicester's books, many without straight
relegation clauses.
"Going down shouldn't be a reason to abandon ship," Melville
told BBC Sport.
"I think you should be coming back up with your club and making
a statement.
"They are committed and loyal to their clubs. If they did come
down, they would come back up because they would make sure they
do."
'Promotion and relegation was agreed'
Props Dan Cole and Ellis Genge, scrum-half Youngs, fly-half
George Ford, centre Tuilagi and wing Jonny May all played key
roles in England's recent Six Nations campaign.
While most of their contracts do include a contingency in the
event of relegation, they are not thought to be straight
relegation clauses whereby either the player or club could
terminate the deal.
But despite the gulf in quality between the top two tiers of
English rugby, interim chief executive Melville said the RFU
could "absolutely" select players operating in the Championship,
adding they might be "fresher" at that level.
"We can move forward and pick players from the Championship," he
said.
"It would probably mean they get more rest than they probably
would at the moment which might make them fresher."
The Premiership clubs remain keen on 'ring-fencing' the top
flight, but Melville has reiterated the RFU's stance that there
will be a team going down at the end of the season in May.
"It's not just about one team, it's about the whole league," he
added. "Promotion and relegation was agreed, and that's how it
ends up.
"It is a vibrant competition, and it shows the strength of
promotion and relegation."

I seem to recall when Pennell at Worcester was on the England
radar & they went down that they didn't rule out picking him
while he was in the Championship either.

Very well remembered. Nothing new but brought back into light
now the chances are higher or more England players possibly
being relegated this year. Don’t see anything wrong with it,
especially if they are still performing well for England.

pick the best players for the positions. the only challenge
being are they facing the standard of opposition regularly to
prepare them for international rugby.

That's the big thing. If you're regularly playing teams like
Ealing, Nottingham, & Hartbury, with no exposure to even the
lower level of European competition, the players will be lacking
the intensive game pressure that's needed to be able to jump
into International competition with just a few weeks in training
camp.

On the flip side, that cost him a potential England career.

Then, of course, there's the question of whether a quarter of
the England starting XV and a third of the 23 should be picked
from a team who have been in the bottom half of the Prem table
all season. Perhaps that question is overly simplistic, but it
does seem to me that something is not right in terms of England
selectors maybe being a bit too traditional about where they
pluck their players from. You could easily argue that in the
Prem this season:
Thorley > May
Cipriani > Ford
Basically anyone > Youngs
Please can we find someone > Cole
Tuilagi and Genge would be the ones that remain in the squad for
me. And okay, Jonny May has tonnes of credit in the bank so
completely understand why he continues to command a pick. But we
need to see more representation for top of the table teams if we
want to be genuinely successful - otherwise you just make a
mockery of the whole process.
Using the final 6N game as a prime example, for Quins to have 1
representative and Gloucester to have none in the 23 just seems
crazy. To put that in perspective, Worcester and Newcastle had 1
each. Leicester (6) had more players in that matchday squad than
Sarries (who had 5) and Exeter (who had 4). Wasps also had 4.
This just doesn't feel right.

Thing is, TomBuckQuin, this sort of thing comes up regularly;
usually as an argument about not picking "in form" players in
favour of experienced internationals who maybe aren't shining at
club level.
The "selectors" (or Eddie as he is known) watch all of them and
get all the ones they are interested in along to training.
That's the bit we don't see and it's clear that in some cases
"in form" players just don't cut it at the camp. Sometimes they
are picked but it becomes clear they can't make the step up -
Alex Goode for example. A long time ago, Mike Catt, until they
started using him as a utility player, not fly-half. I'd say the
same happened with Steffon Armitage; everyone raved about him
for ages but he was anonymous in his first two games and subbed
after 50 mins(?) in the second; a real damp squib.
Selectors know what they are looking for and I can't believe any
of them would go against their own judgement in favour of
popular opinion; they want to keep their jobs. Of course, that
doesn't mean they always get it right.

I agree with you that international selection is a totally
different kettle of fish but when you're trying to crowbar
Elliot Daly into some kind of non-liability at full back, you
have Ben Youngs becoming England's most-capped scrum half and
Dan Cole coming off the bench as an impact player, something is
very wrong. And why Ben Te'o has ever even got within touching
distance of an England shirt... I just haven't the foggiest.
For each of those players there are better options available,
who are playing consistently well at the top of the Prem. But
yes, technically, that's subjective and the old "they don't fit
my game plan" or "they don't have the same experience at
international level" cop outs start flying - and just like that,
Eddie's off the hook. If the players I just mentioned were
performing well on the international stage in patches of more
than 10 mins at a time then fine, but when they're not, maybe
Eddie's "game plan" or reluctance to give others "international
experience" are the problems. And then you have to ask the
question: "if they're not performing well in the Prem, why do
you expect them to be better when they play for England?" The
reason this comes up all the time is that NZ nail it - they pick
the players who are playing well in Super Rugby and look what
they get in return.
