Our Run-in
DIR By: Comet

Well, last season couldn't end soon enough for us given our
form. This season we would like to keep going into June!!!
What do people make of our run-in?
Which games should we be targeting as must wins?
For me, the Saints game at home is huge! If we can beat them and
prevent them getting any BPs then I think top 4 is ours!
The run-in:
Wuss v Quins (Challenge Cup) - We will nick it.
Sale v Quins (League) - Too close to call. Hopefully a win
(maybe no BP, though).
Quins v Saints (League) - Must win! BP victory, perhaps. Can we
stop them scoring 4 tries?
CC Semi-Final - Hopefully!
Exeter v Quins (League) - LBP. They only have the league to
focus on. I hope we will get something.
Quins v Tigers (League) - Given their form, this is a home
banker! (Gulp!)
CC Final - Hopefully!!!!
Wasps v Quins (League) - They should be safe with nothing to
play for, we should see them off quite comfortably. BP win.
Then on to the Semi and the Final (versus Glaws!!!)

Chiefs will have guaranteed a home semi final after this weekend
but will still give us a sound thrashing - it's an annual
tradition.
I'd like to think after two very poor performances we might run
Sale close. If we put out another really bad defensive effort I
think top 4 is gone. We'd be meeting Saints after three losses
on the bounce with them playing some fantastic rugby and pushing
to overtake us.
(Before the comments come in -- yes I did say we looked certain
to get top 4 given the points difference but that's the joy of
being wrong and changing your mind.)
However - I took a LOT of flak in our wins over Warriors and
Bristol for being very critical of our defence and saying
something had gone badly wrong and we looked very vulnerable.
Everyone banged on about us nailing a BP first half but all I
was doing was pointing out that something looked broken (that
was covered up by the tries).
Since then we've been exposed in exactly that way - the Glos
game was horrific and the second half against Sarries we never
left our 22.
I'm amazed how we've improved since last year and never expected
us to be anything other than not terrible this year - so yes
it's possible to think "well we have got better", but whatever
was fixed in our defence by the time of the win against Chiefs
appears to have been broken again.

I think we'll beat Tigers and possibly Saints and lose the rest.

I reckon
Wuss v Quins (Challenge Cup) - Narrow win. Can't decide if we'll
have to hang on to a decent lead or take the lead at the end.
Sale v Quins (League) - Think we'll get an away win, with a BP
but with them also getting a losing BP. I don't think we'll win
with a BP because we're so much better, but as we are conceding
so many points we need to score a hat load too, which we have
largely been doing until the last couple.
Quins v Saints (League) - Another win but with saints picking up
one or two BPs.
CC Semi-Final - If we make it, I suspect we'll lose.
Exeter v Quins (League) - Loss with no BP.
Quins v Tigers (League) - Closer than it should be, but a win.
CC Final - I fear not
Wasps v Quins (League) - Got a feeling they'll win this but we
should get a LBP.

I think it's harsh to say that the performance against Sarries
was "very poor". It was a very good performance in most
respects, let down by two areas - failing to get to terms with
JP Doyle's interpretation of the breakdown, and failing to hit
our jumpers in the lineout. If one of those two had been even
half as bad as it was on the day, we could easily have won that
game - and still had chances to even quite late in play.
It was nowhere near as bad as the Gloucester performance.
All of which said, I look at all of those games except Exeter
and think we have a decent chance to win them if we play well.

Reckon we'll get a confidence bounce with a win this weekend.
Genuinely think the rest then depends on how the Sale game goes.
Lose in a poor manner and I can see us losing against an
impressive Saints team, then Chiefs is a definite loss then we
meet a Tigers team who are likely to be battling for every
single scrap to avoid relegation.
So we'd better win this weekend.....
(quick addition coz we posted at the same time -- I do think our
second half against Sarries was really bad, the penalty count,
the failure to slow the game and re-establish some momentum)

On current form and with that run-in versus the form and run-ins
of our nearest rivals, I think we'll just about miss out on top
4 - obviously I hope I'm wrong. Anyway, I keep trying to bring
back perspective for my own sake - I think Gussy's priority this
season was regrouping, consolidating and securing Champs Cup
rugby next season. That would have been a very decent first
season under his tutelage by anyone's standards. Think even he
is a little bit surprised how well we've done up until now given
the environment he inherited. As long as we finish in the top 6
I'll be very happy. Top 4 is a bonus. Not too bothered about the
European Cup - as controversial as this might be, I would
actually rather our players weren't playing so many games and
can just focus on the Prem run-in...

I do not think we looked after the ball enough against Sarries.
Not sure what the stats say but how many times did we spill it.
And with Skleton and Billy V causing us issues we could not
afford to keep giving up possession.

I still think we will nick it. Talk about Saints being in great
form, they lost at home to Bristol a few weeks ago. We have the
advantage of 8 points. The sides below us play each
other/Sarries and Exeter. No matter what Sarries and Exeter
have to play for (Or not) most games I would still expect them
to do the business, they are that good. Its ours to lose, 5
points from the next two and I will say we are fine (Big call I
know)
