I also think it was an Ellis vanity project. We do not sell out
apart from very few games. Hopefully they officially park the
idea, sort out the small Stand (north?) and focus on the team.

I’m really excited about a proposed new stadium although my
experience of the transformation of the North, South and West
stands at Upton Park left a sour taste. It destroyed the
atmosphere, increased ticket prices and bizarrely, made tickets
less accessible despite increasing capacity. The club went down
the route of corporate events at the expense of the fans and I
walked away from football.
I do worry that a new Stoop would be more about selling
apartments than increasing and improving match day atmosphere.
One of the few things I did like about the Sale match was the
terracing for standing. I’m not familiar with the laws regarding
terracing in the PL and I know it’s not a popular in today’s
society where everyone wants a seat for everything, but that is
where you get people to congregate and be vocal. That’s where
your choir and banter comes from. You only need a lower tier at
one end to lead.
How do we entice another 10k people when we can’t manage a third
chorus of Quinn The Eskimo..?

I’d rather trim 3-4 who are the standard Quins squad filler who
might get a few starts here and there, and invest the wages in
say two out and out players who add quality.
Also, I think whoever negotiates some of these contracts needs
shooting because what we pay some of our squad for their efforts
is a joke considering other sides in our league fair.

I wonder how much David Ellis spent on the vanity project and
when the prospects of planning seemingly receded he departs. Not
sure about his legacy?

I'm not sure this was a vanity project. When this thing started
we sold out The Stoop for something like 8 out of 10 prem home
games. The crowds have withered since then.

I'd rather that the players and the coaching team we have
started to earn their respective crusts - there may be 2-3 key
positions that need filling, but get what we've got playing -
they can, but they aren't...

I seem to recall that there has been talk of extending the
stadium for ages. I joined a fan forum workshop many years ago
about it. At the time, they were canvassing for opinions on what
we would expect (my contribution was to argue firmly for
front-loading stands).
Back then they were clear that there was a threshold of
sell-outs per season (I think around 75/80%?) that they needed
to hit before it would be financially viable. I thought we hit
that a few years ago, but as QP said, this may no longer be the
case.

We very nearly got terracing when the West Stand was rebuilt. A
number of us argued for it and there was an alternate plan where
I think there was terracing in the wings. Obviously it never
happened.

I don't understand the points that are made that we should be
spending on the team rather that wasting money on a stadium.
You can only spend up to salary cap limit. I know that you
could go and buy a couple of marquee players for mega bucks and
you could go and bolster your coaching staff.
But, the money required for this has to come from somewhere.
So, either you need a Nigel Wray to pay for all this out of his
own pocket, or you need a sound business model to pay for it.
Having a stadium that brings in revenue can give the club the
funds to put a competitive team out on the pitch. It isn't
about increasing the numbers of seats at stadium either.
Converting the North Stand to be similar to the South Stand
would increase the seating capacity. But those seats would all
be "cheap seats". To increase revenue, you need more expensive
seats (between the 22 lines on both sides). And, you need more
corporate hospitality options, etc. Ideally, you also need
something that generates revenue on non-match days. (e.g.
Hotels, shops) and a place where you can hold bigger events.
So, in my opinion, you need to get the club running on a sound
financial footing and you will reap the awards on the pitch.
