it's probably necessary as pointed out, revenues come from
stadiums used for more than just rugby, and there is scope to
have more spectators at games. whilst not on the same scale,
learn lessons from Tottenham, don't overpromise or saddle with
too much debt!

Is there seriously no scope just to gradually update/expand each
stand to bring then up to standard with increased capacity
instead of a sudden jump in capacity and facilities that the
players and supporters will be unfamiliar with there for may
affect performances for first season or 2.
Moving into a new stadium is not the promised land straight
away. It takes a while to adapt and saddles the
club/organisation with a lot of debt such as Arsenal, Tottenham,
Wasps, The FA etc etc.

I'm probably in the tiny minority but I'm excited to have a
stadium with the corners filled in. Always prefer a bowl. Build
the stadium and the fans will come - up to a point. And the
increase in capacity we're talking about feels spot-on. Big
enough to give us serious room for growth, while in the short
term not so big that it's an absolute atmos vacuum. Plus the
extra revenue from non-matchday shenanigans.
The club has to do this at some point. Sooner rather than later
is the obvious course of action to future-proof the club.

I somehow doubt it will be a full bowl, as the stands are
supposed to remain "front-loading" from my recollection, with
walkways at the front, and that would put any corner seating at
quite a distance away from the pitch.
As for the idea of simply renovating each stand in turn, that's
probably more complex than a complete new build, and would take
longer, with more chance for locals to complain during the
planning permission for each phase, etc. Best to do this as a
one off move. I doubt that the teams performances would be
adversely affected if they started a new season in significantly
better behind the scenes facilities!

Wouldn't you want to see the club grow? You can't get more fans
in to watch the guys each week if you don't make the stadium
bigger. Until you do so, you're naturally limited in terms of
the number of regular fans you have pumping their energy (and
money) into the club. So what, we just stick with The Stoop as
it is forever? Naive to think we'd be competitive in the
Premiership for ongoing generations if we did that. It's a
changing landscape - move with the times. And you know what? I
doubt it will be as bad as whatever post-apocalyptic ghostly
silent stadium you have in mind. And if it is for a few seasons,
so be it. I'll keep turning up and doing my bit to provide buzz,
as I'm sure would 90% of current members.

another issue of gradually building up each stand is where do
you relocate the supporters/fans from the stand that is
currently being revamped.

Depends on the aims of the project obviously but I think these
things can generally be turned around in the off-season...
Still, it's not a long term solution as Fred rightly points out.
Modernisation isn't just increasing capacity - the inside
facilities for non-matchday are currently not particularly
appealing. Some of the mooted plans for the new stadium in terms
of attracting business to use the new facilities on weekdays
look like they've really been thought through.

True about using the off-season but that would only leave 3 or 4
months to revamp 4 stands depending on last home game in May
often and first home friendly in August / September.
