       Not so.
"Rugby union match officials are responsible for enforcing the
rugby union laws of the game during a match and imposing
sanctions on individuals who do not follow the rules".
That may or may not mean that the better team wins the game.
       That is not their role.

It's not so much as what they penalise it's what they chose to
ignore. How often have you heard the call that the ball was not
fed "straight" when put into the scrum. I have long argued the
RFU should enforce some of these contentious infringements -
like offside - with zero tolerance. It would only take a couple
of games before all the teams and players got the message.
Would Quins have won if WB had been stricter in applying the
laws? I very much doubt it. Gloucester were by far the better
team. But did WB impact on the game by not applying such laws
consistently and without fear of favour? Yes he certainly did.
It leads to frustration and then annoyance with him. I maybe
being unfair to WB as on a good day he is a world class referee.

No agenda against Barnes, no it wouldn't have have changed the
game, no sour grapes as already stated. However I am fed up when
there is no consistency in the reffing and particularly when the
ref calls for crossing/accidental offside but because they were
tackled a few yards further forward waves it saying no
advantage. How does he know, they could have been knocked back
in the tackle and made no or minus yards, you will never know so
if they infringe and you call it give the punishment.

Yes, he is. Happy to say that he seems to have moved on from
making most games into The Wayne Barnes Show. But even great
refs like Nigel Owens have bad days.
Another of my pet gripes with all refs is calling for a
scrum-half to "use it" then five or six seconds later calling it
again. I thought there was a time allowed (3.8 seconds or some
other strange figure) after which the ball could be played by
anyone? How often is that enforced?

Just for clarity, are you saying that refs are not criticised
       when we win?

Im saying that if we had won, although the ref may have made a
mistake or two, this thread would not exist as no one would
really care/bother bringing it up. These threads only seem to
pop up when we lose (along with the wording "Im not saying we
lost because of the ref, xxx deserved to beat us but.....")

I was at a seminar over the road recently when Wayne Barnes was
the guest speaker. Almost the first thing he said was:-
"If you are going to ask me why we don't make the scrum halves
put the ball in straight, I will be going back out of the door
as quickly as I came in".
Obviously a sensitive subject for the poor referees!

I'm clearly going to have to repeat myself (again), Quinky.
I didn't think Barnes had a bad game. Nor do I think he (or
anyone) thought he cost us the game. But some of the stuff
people are complaining about every team does. Some was down to
the touch judge. Some down to the TMO.
And as honkytonk said and as Blucherquin pointed out, we
wouldn't be talking about him if we'd won and the implication of
him having a bad game is that it was his fault, not ours.
Don't understand this thread at all. It wasn't that long ago
that we had a thread lauding Barnes. Everyone can have an off
day, although I didn't think he did.
