Swimming left-stream, I'd like to see an "emerging" Lions team
play the Pacific Islands, Japan, N. America and Georgia etc...

format? I.e. these games would replace those summer/autumn
tours? Can't help feeling a lot of people on here are just
averse to change of any kind. If it goes ahead, I'm sure it will
become a success and people will love it. These changes just
don't phase me. I'm sure World Rugby has a plan for tier 2/3
countries not to be cut away - no one wants that. This is
professional elite sport. When the 5 Nations became the 6
Nations the majority were wailing - now the 6N is one of the
biggest sporting occasions of the year every year and even
non-rugby fans love it. Similar things will happen here if this
plan becomes reality. I also don't think it de-values the World
Cup in any way. Completely different vibe.

ringfencing for a bit. So predictable, I know. Sometimes you
actually have to act and make changes to freshen things up.
Feels like rugby is on the verge of one of those phases -
whether you like it or not - so just feels to me like the best
way to be ready for it is at least keep an open mind.

Really not adverse to change, the RFU is like an organisation
from the 1950s.
Ringfencing is fine - it's the hedge fund cash that worries me
but not because of being conservative, but because the game's
best interests and hedge funds are not the same.
But this plan looks set to kill international rugby development
and make the World Cup far less of an event.

It just seems unnecessary. We already have 6 Nations, Rugby
Championship and RWC. Add in the Lions tours, summer tours and
AIs and I don't see what this would achieve or what the value is
other than cash for World Rugby and the Unions, at the expense
probably of Lions, Baa Baas and tiers 2 and 3. We also have
world rankings, so while they're not perfect, we know who the
best team in the world is at the end of each year. All very
pointless really.
Re one of the posts above, it's not really a question of being
phased by change or wailing about it just because we're old
stick in the muds. It just makes no sense and no reason to think
it will grow the game any more than the current competitions
would. It would probably set the game back in those areas where
it is slowly growing.
They've been chasing the American market for ages but maybe
they'd be better off trying to strengthen the game in places
where they actually have an appetite for it.
I don't understand the "It's happening whether you like it or
not" attitude

it's like they looked at other sports like alpine skiing which
has World Cup every year and Championships every 2 and thought
they needed to do something like that?
Seems like too many games for welfare of players which might
mean (like the round ball game) you find certain competitions
start to only see the "B" teams. But then to exclude the other
tier 2 and 3 teams makes it feel like it's less about the game
and, god forbid, more about generating more revenue.
I don't disagree with change, in fact I welcome it, but what is
the goal of the change? Raise the level and participation of
rugby around the world? or make more money for a small group?

World Rugby have released a statement:

That statement still says that they see an annual competition as
something to aim for, which we already have. What we need is
promotion by WR of the other International competitions, such as
the Americas 6 Nations and the Rugby Europe Championship that're
underway at the moment

So what we learn from that statement is:
1) The article has got it 100% correct
2) Players have seen it rightly as a great chance to gain a
power position by releasing a strong statement and putting World
Rugby on the back foot
3) The final quote below is the death knell -- and is exactly
the same basis for the cash that's gone into the Premiership.
Fans of the sport as it is now as irrelevant, it's do what you
can to exploit marketing and TV rights wherever you can.
"Consumer research confirms a structured annual competition
would make fans and new audiences more likely to watch, attend
and engage with international rugby, exposing the sport to new
fans worldwide. There is also no doubt that a structured annual
international competition would deliver significantly greater
long-term global media revenue for reinvestment in the global
game. This project has at its heart long-term growth and
stability, not short-term wins, and that includes greater
opportunity for players."

It would kill international rugby in countries outside the 12
and they would never have the money to develop as a national
team and would never reach a standard to compete. The similar
situation as ring fencing the premiership at 13 or 14 no one
else would ever get there as they would not have the money to
put a team together or any one to play. The premiership isn't
working as there is not a competitive second tier, the
premiership relegation and promotion can work if the second tier
has at least 6 teams that could achieve promotion and might win
one or two games when promoted. For it to work then serious
money needs investiging further down the tree. The same is
needed for international rugby.

I'm still furious but not surprised at all this crap. How much
can you turn the sport into a total joke in search of revenue?
Throwing out Fiji and Georgia for the benefit of Japan and the
USA because they've got money just sums up the utter awfulness
of it - and the threat it represents to the game.
I'm not just talking about the "spirit" of rugby, which is
barely clinging on by its bloody fingertips, but the future for
existing fans. We are irrelevant. Irrelevant to the Prem,
irrelevant to World Rugby.
They will only be content when pay-TV audiences in unexploited
markets are up, there are no scrums, 10 players a side and "red
zone" clocks to dictate how long you've got to try to score once
you cross the 22.
It will not matter for one second if there's no one watching in
any of the stadiums, or if the World Cup means anything, or if
the Lions exist. They will all have lots of revenue, and I won't
be watching - but it won't matter for a second.
