       Harlequins vs Saracens
       Saturday 16 February
       by Bedfordshire Boy
Seems like forever that we were last treated to a Premiership
match at The Stoop, but easy enough to recall the scoreline
Quins 28 Exeter Chiefs 26. On paper at least today's game should
be less of a struggle with a much bigger margin of win for the
       home side.
A very strong starting line up for Quins and the days when we
would all cringe at the names listed on the bench seem to
becoming something of the past. At long last Horwill and Symonds
starting a game together, a great looking back row that can
afford to have James Chisholm sitting on the bench and a set of
backs very close to our strongest.
       [attachimg=1]
       Let`s Get Going
Marcus Smith got the game underway and Quins had obviously taken
note of recent England performances by scoring inside the first
minute of the game. Warriors failed to deal with Smith`s kick,
the ball is turned over and Warriors Hougard fails to deal with
a very delicate kick to the corner by Danny Care allowing Joe
Marchant to gather the ball and touch down. With Smith adding
two extra points from a kick wide out the visitors are seven
points behind within the first two minutes.
Warriors set up a prolonged period of attack inside Quins half
but the defence is solid and they fail to make much progress.
Warriors ball is turned over in midfield and a very delicate
chip by Smith over the advancing Warriors defence bounces
awkwardly, is gathered by Jack Clifford whose pass to Gabs
Ibitoye allows him to run around attempted tackles to score
under the posts. A simple kick for Smith this time moves the
score on to Quins 14 Warriors 0 with only seven minutes gone.
In general Warriors continue to have most of the possession and
territory but a Quins attack down the left hand side results in
a ruck and as the ball emerges Mike Brown is there to pick up
the ball and run 25 metres to score in the corner for Quins
third try of the afternoon. Another good kick from Smith, with
his mentor crouched just behind him, moves the score on to Quins
21 Warriors 0 and we are still in the first quarter of the
       match.
Once again all of the play is inside the Quins half and with the
referee playing a penalty advantage Warriors manage to butcher
an overlap on their left wing as the Quins defence once again
holds them at bay. From the penalty back on the right hand side
of the pitch Warriors kick to the corner and although they get
the ball over the line the try is disallowed following TMO
intervention. Warriors are awarded a penalty though as Quins are
given another yellow card warning and this time the Warriors
line out catch and drive sequence is rewarded as the pack rumble
over the line allowing hooker Jack Singleton to touch down.
Duncan Weir is successful with the conversion, Quins 21 Warriors
7 with 13 minutes to go until the break.
Quins attack from the restart and enjoy a period of play within
Warriors territory and a fairly aimless kick by Mike Brown is
fumbled by Warriors on their twenty two giving Quins a scrum in
an attacking position. Quins continue to attack and as play
breaks down 10 metres from the Warriors line, Mike Brown acting
as scrum half chips the ball to the corner for Jack Clifford to
gather and touch down for an easy score. Another two points from
the boot of Marcus Smith moves Quins score onto 28 points and
secures a try bonus point just 3 minutes from half time.

       Jack Clifford Scores
The remainder of the half sees Warriors pressing the Quins line
and this time Quins are penalised and told that the next
misdemeanour in the red zone will result in a yellow card.
Warriors elect for a scrum 5 metres out in front of the post but
a massive effort by the Quins forwards see Warriors pushed off
of their own put in followed by the half time whistle. Bit of a
strange half really with Warriors enjoying the majority of
possession and territory but Quins well up on the scoreboard. It
seemed that Quins scored each time that they got well into the
       Warriors half.
Warriors start the second half where they left off in the first
by spending the early period in the Quins half and a kick and
chase by Warriors is bravely defended by Mike Brown going down
on the ball and securing a penalty. Another bit of brave play
followed shortly after when Danny Care went to ground to secure
a loose kick by Warriors playing out of their own twenty two
only to have a Warriors player drop on him. While Care was being
treated the officials decided to look at the incident and after
a lot of discussion referee Luke Pearce decided that there had
been foul play, but as it was only slight foul play there should
be no card. Is that an option open to the referee, perhaps he
should have suggested misconduct rather than foul play?
       [attachimg=3]
       Ouch, That Hurt
With the fifty minute mark approaching Warriors added to their
score when they get the all wide to winger Bryce Heem who
touched down in the corner. The conversion attempt from Weir hit
the posts so the Warriors total remained on twelve points. Four
changes for Quins before the restart with Boyce, Ward, Chisholm
and Lang replacing Marler, Crumpton, Dombrandt and Smith
respectively. Following a short restart kick from James Lang
Warriors were adjudged to be offside and a massive kick from
Lang resulted in a scrum to Quins five metres from the Warriors
line. Quins retain the ball and as it is recycled play moves
across the pitch towards the posts where Danny Care finds a gap
to dive over the line. With the extra points being added by Lang
the score moves on to Quins 35 Warriors 12 fifteen minutes into
       the second half.
Two changes for Warriors at prop and number eight and as Quins
lose the ball in attack a long advantage is played which sees
Warriors run the ball out of their own twenty two through centre
Mills who passes out to Josh Adams who runs deep into the Quins
half before being brought to ground. Mike Brown is shown a
yellow card for not rolling away, Warriors kick to touch and
attack from the line out but a great steal by Dave Ward gives
Quins some respite as the ball is cleared to touch. Warriors
change their half backs on 62 minutes and add to their score
within five minutes. Direct running by Warriors is starting to
pay dividends as flanker Lewis sets Josh Adams free for a
straightforward run in to score under the posts. With the
absence of Wier, Pennell has taken on the kicking duties and has
no trouble in bringing the score to Quins 35 Warriors 19.
Mike Brown returns to the field of play as Quins press from the
restart and it is a pass from Care from a ruck that allows a run
straight through a gap by centre Ben Tapaui to score from 10
metres out. Another straightforward conversion from Lang and the
scoreboard reads Quins 42 Warriors 19 on seventy minutes. A few
more changes for Quins as Glynn, Lewis and Alofa replace
Horwill, Care and Marchant and the scoring for the afternoon was
still not over. With the Quins defence now looking stretched and
Warriors looking more lively it only took a few minutes for
Warriors to score as strong running through the Quins defence
from substitute Lawrence set Heaney free to score. Two more
points from the boot of Pennell brings the Warriors total to
twenty six points and there are still seven minutes to play.
Quins last substitute Josh Ibuanopke came on for Will Collier
before the match got underway again. This score seemed to spur on
Quins and from the restart they spent the next couple of minutes
camped on the Warriors line before space was created for James
Lang to touchdown for an unconverted try. The Warriors restart
is kicked directly in to touch which gives Quins another
opportunity to attack and Quins then find themselves playing
with fourteen men again as Ibitoye is injured and has to leave
the field as all replacements have been used. With a minute of
the match remaining Warriors are awarded a scrum on their own
twenty two, the ball is passed to Mills whose neat chip finds
Heem on the wing who after making ground passes to Lawrence with
the final pass going to Howe who scores under the posts. The
last kick of the match is the conversion by Pennell which gives
Warriors a try bonus point and brings the final score to Quins
       47 Warriors 33.
A funny old match to sum up, you never felt that Quins were
going to lose but you have to be disappointed with the fact that
Warriors scored three trys in the second half. Having said that
nothing should be taken away from Warriors who have a side of
strong and direct runners and worked hard throughout the match.
Interesting that in the past Quins have dominated possession and
territory in matches and lost, in this game it was quite the
opposite. The attendance was announced as 12235 and Quins did
exactly what they had to do, come away with five points to
maintain their third place in the table. Things are definitely
on the up but Quins will have to keep focussed and next weeks
match is another one in the must win category.
