Darkness as a Trend in Occult
By: Jaguar Spirit Date: March 5, 2019, 10:59 am

Darkness just is…
Not a trend or hipster cool thing like :metal:. We can evolve
without the edge or the trendy darkness and angst.
I dont seek to immerse myself in bane or opening the darkest
suite of the Hells.
I recall being walked down a very worn stone spiral staircase
into the bowls of a mountain to end up in the pitch darkness of
a cylindrical room (later illuminated). It was to help me find
all my senses when there was no stimuli. That darkness evolved
me in its special way. But I didnt seek it out to be dangerous
and edgy. Or evil or scary. It shouldnt drive one into
depressions or insanity.
Darkness isn't that. Darkness just is…it is a tool. A
neutrality.
Yeah…just thinking out loud. No judging…just introspection and
what darkness means to me, personally.
What does it represent for you? How do you feel about the
pursuit of darkness?

A necessary counterpoint to light, neither more important than
the other. I believe that to truly understand magic (or life in
general, for that matter) one should study the light and the
dark and everything in between, but not get obsessed with any
one aspect of existence. As for darkness being trendy in the
occult community...That in my opinion is in large part a counter
reaction to the white light obsessed Wiccan revolution that was
so...painfully...prevalent after Charmed.

I prefer to keep my dealings with dark and light as internal
things/activities, rather than outward expressions. I am a
businesswoman and I dress as one in everyday life. Expressing
myself through trendy makeup/clothing/shoes just wouldn't earn
me any bonus points with the serious businessmen that I work
with in my industry. Which makes for another thread. haha.

I'm rather fond of the goth style myself. It however is not fond
of me, so I dress pretty much the same as any other people here
(though metal is really popular here, so band shirts of manowar,
iron maiden and stuff like that are pretty common). Though most
of my clothes are black, red or green, now that I think of
it....I think I'm more "dark" looking naked though due to
tattoos and long black hair. Don't even wear my pentacle
necklace very often anymore due to there being essentially a
pentacle tattoo on my chest...Maybe I should start wearing a
Thor's hammer or something...a replica Brisingamen might be a
bit too "girly" for everyday wear...maybe an arrowhead for
Skadi.

I deal with a lot of color in chakra work and black tends to be
an energy sink, so I don't wear it so often. I got into wearing
colors to enhance my chakra activity years ago and kind of stuck
with it.
Aside from that, I was apparently wearing too much black in high
school and my mother forbid me to wear black again and threw all
my black clothing out and bought me outrageously floral/feminine
clothing one fall. I guess I p*ssed her off enough to actually
stop neglecting my clothing needs. I'm a girly girl, so I like
flowers and feminine things anyway so it didn't bother me a bit.
I live in a very Xtian area so I am careful not to give away
clues to my lifestyle while in my own home.

I guess I'm lucky that Finland is Christian pretty much only in
theory. Most would be more accurately described as
atheist...which means their very likely to laugh at you and mock
you for anything that they consider out of the norm (at least
where they can't get caught and ruin their liberal cred) but
very unlikely to attack you, destroy your property or actively
harass or shun you.

I consider darkness and light as parts of me. They both exist in
me, and I can hop from one to the other with ease. I never had
to seek any of the two, even though I must admit darkness is
more comforting, it's not a coincidence how newborns feel more
relaxed, more like in the mother's womb in the darkness. But I
do enjoy a sunny day as well, as long its not super hot outside!
After all l literally spend half my time in Darkness and the
other half in Light.
Cloth wise, I like black, not because of my practices but I just
like the colour. Plus I'm very uninterested in fashion and super
lazy to combine colours, my choice is black with black and
black! There, always stylish, you can't go wrong with black!

Darkness is a side of us as important as the light. One cannot
be seen without the others. And i'm blind having just light on
my eyes than having only shadows around me. It's not a moral
part of us. It's something inside of us we have been created
with.
As such shadow work is an important part too of evolving.

Dark and light are equally relevant.
I think when I think of this trendiness...it seems to bypass
balance altogether. Not just in appearance. But dark and light
together allows us to develop as a whole and evolve. Shadow work
is just as important as light work. I think I'm talking about
how people seem to make magic ALL darkness, when it's not. But
that trend continues and a negative stereotype is created.
