Soliciting Voluntary Donations
By: rhandom Date: December 15, 2020, 9:02 am

I've updated the anniversary e-mail so that it includes a small
solicitation for a voluntary donation. Seems like an
appropriate time to ask people... after they've just spent a
year participating with us enough to have triggered the e-mail
(which is sent only if you've attended six or more events in the
year leading up to your anniversary date).
In addition to that, I am planning to do a 2x/year solicitation
for donations thusly:
1) Blog post asking for donations and talking about club
expenses and any special projects we may want to fund, and
announcing the:
2) Twenty-Smacker party (an everyone-welcome celebration of some
sort at which we can take donations).
Beyond those two things (anniversary e-mail and 2x/year
celebration), are there other things we should consider doing to
solicit donations? For example, do we want to add a note to the
upcoming event reminder template that the club exists on
donations, and if you want to make a donation click "here" for
information?

We got some great input last night into how to raise money for
the club. I would like to:
1) Have a town hall to brainstorm ideas to solicit member
donations - I want to keep this separate from corporate donation
discussions because I think people will be tempted to focus
solely on getting corporate donations and not so much on having
members pitch in, which is very important;
2) Have a second town hall to brainstorm ideas to solicit
corporate donations - we would need a volunteer who would follow
up on these things as I can't/won't be the one to do it;
3) Research websites for collecting online donations - maybe
there's something we can use, and offer as an option for folks
who want to donate;
4) Research how it works to "text" donations (e.g., the way CKUA
does it)

New tip from Chris Wenslaw:
there is a site Pay Pal Donations, which can be incorporated
into COC website and has quite low fees, but seems to be aiming
at charitable organisations –may be worth checking. Also, I
checked with my daughter (she is marketing analyst) how to
monetize a website. She explained to me, that most of her
clients are using Google Adsense, where advertisers are bidding
on a specific web spaces and Google then places their ad there.
Obviously, Google takes a cut, usually charging per “click”.

Great idea regarding the anniversary email Rhonda! I especially
like the exemption for those who have not attended at least 6
events in the 12 months leading up to their anniversary date.
This eliminates the risk of coming across like we're more
concerned about their donation than their current satisfaction
with the club.
My favourite idea is organizing an annual or semi-annual social
gathering like a club picnic to solicit donations. Obviously
its a challenging time right now with covid but under normal
circumstances I believe events like that would be very
successful for us.
In addition I still feel you can't beat the old on-the-spot
donation opportunities. Granted we have already established
coordinators will no longer be expected to ask or accept
donations at events but I have a feeling there will be some
coordinators who will happily give attendees the opportunity to
contribute which could still result in a significant percentage
of our annual intake.
There are definitely some great ideas here and as long as we can
find solutions that cost little to no money I'm all for it. I
think options that require us to pay a sizable monthly or annual
fee should only be considered when the club is averaging at
least 80 events a month. In the short term, I believe we have
adequate means of accepting donations through e-transfer, in
person, club fund raiser events and solicitation emails.

We could add a paragraph in the event reminder e-mail template
about giving donations at the event itself. Coordinators can
leave it in, or take it out, as they prefer.

People (me) appreciate having less to read.
I prefer a brief quarterly / semi annual request.
