Keep "Premier Member" but without the voting rights

I've had a handful of people voice to me their concern about the
removal of "Premier Membership"... not because they don't want
to lose the voting rights, but because they don't want to lose
the four-hour head-start on event notifications.
Now, when the club was really strong, I could see where this
would be a definite advantage. I'm hoping we can grow the club
back to a position of strength, like it enjoyed years ago, so,
by definition, I'm hoping to bring back the situation where
there's a "mad rush" to sign up for events when they're posted.

So, I've been thinking about this, and I want to propose an
alternative to outright removal of "Premier Membership".
What if we kept "Premier Membership", and retained all of the
associated perks EXCEPT for voting rights? The current list of
"perks" is:
- Receive 'New Event' e-mail notifications four hours prior
to Regular Members.
- Preferred registration for some paid events subsidized by
COC (i.e., First Aid Certification).
- Preferred registration for some Learn events.
- Attendance at the annual Volunteer & Premier Member
Appreciation Party (includes food and prizes)
- Voting privileges at Special General, and Annual General
Meetings.
I think, based on what I've heard from people, that what our
Premiers care most about (besides supporting the club
financially), is that four-hour head-start.
If we take this approach, people can still have their four-hour
head-start, we can move the voting rights over to active
members, which is where we want it, and everyone is happy.
Thoughts?

Just so I'm clear on this proposal, you are suggesting keeping
the two-tiered membership structure in place AND continuing with
the required $25 annual premier membership fee (regular members
- no fee) BUT removing the voting rights from the list of perks.
Is that right?
If it is, then yes I don't see an issue with giving members the
option to purchase additional "luxury" privileges with the club
if they so choose provided voting rights is not one of them.
I think it's extremely important that ALL our active members
have a voice in the future of our club not just those with paid
memberships.

I would have concerns about maintaining the premier membership.
I don't really agree with a two tiered membership. I would like
see the COC treat all its members equally. I belong to several
big hiking meetups and one of the biggest complaints I hear is
when people receive preferential treatment. I think if we make
our processes fair to everyone then I think that will be an
asset for us. People really want a club with no bs. That is what
brought me to the COC way back in 2004. Just my two cents...

My thoughts are that as long as everyone has an opportunity to
become a premier member, then it shouldn't really matter too
much. Four hours isn't that big of an advantage. I do recall
members being upset about not ever being able to get onto events
because they were almost full when it was posted though. I
could go either way on this one. I know, very helpful, right?

I am not a fan of the tiered membership. I would like us all to
be equal members of the COC community. If there are issues that
the events fill up and people end up on waitlists then become a
coordinator. That's why I did, I didn't want to be on the
waitlist anymore so I created my own events.

Yeah, that's how I feel too. Besides, having a mad rush for
event sign-ups isn't our reality anymore like it used to be.
Maybe it will be someday, and maybe it won't - time will tell.
Right now I think it's moot.
So, how about if we approach it thusly:
1) At the Special Meeting, we have a vote to simply abolish
Premier Membership and have voting rights tied to Active
Membership;
2) In case that motion fails, we could have a back-up bylaw
amendment to present which moves voting rights to Active
Membership, but retains Premier Member status with the existing
perks, sans voting rights?
That way, if the first motion fails, we still have an option to
not completely stuck with Premier Membership exactly as it is
today.
Thoughts?

Good feedback. A single tiered membership has always been my
first choice (as I've stated on this forum in the past) but I'm
open to discussing other options (like Rhonda's initial
suggestion) if we were met with significant opposition to
completely eliminating the premier option. I'm on board with
having a second option ready should a vote to abolish premier
memberships not pass. At the very least we need to separate
voting rights from premier membership perks.
