Do we want to continue using Meetup?

I believe our Meetup account carries a cost with it, so there's
a monetary aspect, but there's also an effort aspect, and I
believe that the "costs" of Meetup outweigh the benefits.
Do we want to renew our Meetup account, or let this go?

Im not a fan of promoting the COC within Meetup. Quite frankly
we're just another fish in a seriously overcrowded pond that is
filled with hundreds of other outdoor groups. We have an
amazing web site and dedicated leadership group which
differentiates us from all that noise. I believe when people
search online for outdoor groups and come across our stand alone
site they are thrilled to see we're not just another meetup.
I'm in favour of terminating any existing relationship between
COC and Meetup as soon as possible.

I don't feel the meet-up experiment was successful. Paper
waivers, free for all sign-ups with being able to vette them are
all downsides. There was an email from an individual looking to
take over the meetup thingy - I would presume he wants to use
the name which I don't feel is a good idea. Can that be helped?

Oh, now that's interesting. Is there a fee associated with
       having our Meetup account?
If no, or if it's really small, we might want to consider
keeping our account and updating it to say all of our events are
posted on www.calgaryoutdoorclub.com. I don't think we need to
post on there to keep an account?
Otherwise, we might run the risk of someone starting a Meetup
called the Calgary Outdoor Club, which could turn into a giant
       nightmare!

I looked into meetup groups awhile back and yes there is a fee
       to have one:
  HTML https://help.meetup.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001620472-Organizer-subscription-pricing
In addition, there was quite an uproar last year when word
spread of a possible $2 event fee to be levied against
       registrants.
(important to note the incredible backlash Meetup received over
this seemingly "small fee" as we prepare to vote on our own
       club's future)

Oh, that is a not-insignificant amount to keep the account.
I think we have to let it go. I wonder if there's anything we
can do to prevent someone else using the Calgary Outdoor Club
       name on Meetup?

Woah, that is too expensive to keep. I don't know about
preventing someone from using the name, although, if we're
incorporated, does that give us a trademark or similar that we
could use to force Meetup to take it down?

If we unincorporate we lose the right to use the name ourselves,
so there might be something in that.

This may come into effect meaning it would be $2/month to have
       the meetup account.
  HTML https://www.meetup.com/lp/payment-test-20191016
The original meetup account idea was suppose to promote the
club: high interest events were suppose to be posted on it with
a link and instructions to our website for them to join and sign
       up.
Back then, I was also posting an ad on kijiji on behalf of the
COC and when I reviewed the new members on a monthly basis,
there was quite a bit that said they heard from the club via
       kijiji.
I, or someone else, should resume that practice?

Thank you. I'll look into that Meetup option. $24/month is
much more palatable, and worth keeping if it prevents someone
       from using our name.
There are lots of ways to find new members... I've tried lots of
different things, and my mantra is, it's not enough to just find
new members... we want to find "good" new members - some methods
of finding new members just end up creating us a bunch of work
for little or no benefit. I'm not sure about kijiji. Did the
people who found us that way turn out to be "good" members
(i.e., they attended events, and were a good match with our
"culture")? If so, then I whole-heartedly support the idea of
resuming that practice. If you're willing to do that, Yannick,
that would be great. We don't currently have anyone on our
"Marketing and Promotion Committee". That is a deficit that I
was planning to start addressing once we've got the membership
fees thing sorted out... I'm kind of keeping a few things in
"limbo" until then. Can you have a look at the "How You Can
       Help" page (

me know if you'd be interested in taking on "Advertising and
Promotion Coordinator"? If not, but you're willing to do the
Kijiji posts, can you come up with a title for yourself that I
can put down within that Committee? Something like "Advertising
Administrator" or "Kijiji Coordinator" or some such?
