Preparation for the iRacing Daytona 24
DIR By: Sergey Pupko

---------------------------------------------------------
So I'm taking the liberty of creating a thread dedicated for the
preparation for the Daytona 24 next weekend.
I've been hard at work figuring out a setup, but until we are
able to join official practice sessions, we'll never know. Bill,
if you got the setup I shared with you, could you link it? I
wasn't able to zip it properly :-/
I think I have a pretty stable setup dialed in, but wasn't able
to test it for the duration of the stint during racing
conditions due to.. ahem... crashes. I'll be actively avoiding
those. Will try to put in 2 or 3 races today while we're still
at Daytona on World Sports Car Series.
24 hour mindset - we definitely had it in the Roar, it's time to
bring it to the 24 but with more experience in running such a
grueling event.
Here's how I prepare:
Practice, practice, practice: Do all the practice you have time
for. Find the perfect setup for you. I believe you can change
setups during the race (someone plz confirm).
Find the limits - I think it is perfectly fine to have a lot of
crashes during the practice sessions. It helps you find things
that don't work and things that do. It also helps you develop
boundaries of what can and can't be done. Practice staying at
those limits and being consistent. If you are within 1 second of
your best lap, every lap, you are where you need to be.
During the race, try not to run 10/10ths. I'm saying this to
myself just as much. I tend to run at close to, if not 10/10ths
all the time. Especially during the heat of battle. Find your
pace, keep your pace and when the battle comes to you, whether
you're passing or defending then you can turn up the heat.
Learn to love the pressure of battle - whether you are passing
or defending. When you get into a mode when you're not afraid to
be around other cars without being overwhelmed or intimidated,
you're in the right mind-set to attack and defend. Also, if you
know what your car can do, chances are you know what the
opponent's car can do.
Break a bit earlier when you're chasing a car (especially if
they're close to you). This is how I took myself out on the last
race coming on the back-straight breaking into the bus stop. I
was chasing the leader in the draft, and there was a slow car
ahead of him, but I could not tell how close/far he was. Turns
out he was too close and the leader breaked early. I was looking
at my breaking point and didn't realize the guy ahead was
breaking early. Ended up having slight contact with him and the
iRacing damage model let me down. There was some visual damage
but nothing that would keep me from running the race. In fact,
the car felt like it was fine to continue, but that's iRacing
for you. Intuitive and reactive driving is important. If you
think that the guy ahead might be breaking early, don't wait for
him to break because you may not react in time.
Finally, be able to run a full stint in practice session without
incidents. Off-tracks will happen, but avoid contact. And then
do it again, and again, and again.

Curious about the driver fair share time/laps. what was the
estimated required laps for us did anyone find out? also i was
looking at the schedule, and as it stands:
- Jack - 5 hours
- Bill - 4 1/2 hours
- Justin - 4 hours
- Mikhael - 2 1/2 hours
- Eric - 2 1/2 hours
- Jarred - 2 hours
- Sergey - 1 1/2 hours
- Dave - 1 1/2 hours
will that be enough for all of us to get fair share in? hate to
have a driver short of his required laps and not be available to
return to complete them. if that makes sense. but yeah just
wondering

Based on the Roar results, we should finish with about 840 laps.
840/8 drivers * 1/4 = 26.25 laps (fair share)
Anyone who completes a 50 minute stint will get points.

ill give up a bit of time if someone wants more, i just tossed
my name in a couple spots at first. like if someone has an hour
before or after me, ill give them an extra 30 mins, that way we
both get an hour and a half stint.
Seeing that theres a couple people with only 1.5 hrs, im willing
to give up a bit if they want! I see dave running a stint before
mine, if he wants the extra half hour, no prob!

I'm not a hog so I'll keep my 1.5 hour stint and try to stick
around as much as I can to pick up any more if someone wants to
give it up. It's not about fair share for me :)

I'm sure Bill would give up some time if you wanted Sergey...
There were some open spots there so Bill filled them...

funny fact - in the real 24 hour race last week, they were
running in the 40's average.. so in real life, they are slower
than us.. hahah. The DP and HPD were quite even in the real 24..
just made time in different ways
