Press D and C at the same time, keep holding the D, release C
and press B. What you have there is something that starts with D
and C and ends with the same D (held throughout) and B.
The D and C are offset there so you can see that they are
different notes. If they were right on top of each other you
wouldn't be able to tell that the D is a half note because it
would be partially overwritten by the C under it.
In addition, the offset shows that there's an emphasis on the D
when you strike it. Hit D harder than C, in other words.
