Quite a big subject, but if you start with C major, it has no
accidentals. Go up a perfect fifth to G Major and the key
signature is F sharp, go up another fifth to D major and you
have F and C sharp. Each jump of a fifth to a new key, you add a
sharp. The order of these sharps is FCGDAEB remembered by Father
Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle. To work out what accidentals
a major key has, the last sharp in the key signature will be the
7th note of the scale eg B Major has FCGDA or F#major has
FCGDAE. All scales that start on a white note or sharp have a
sharp keysignature, with the exception of F Major which has a B
flat.
In going up the fifths, after F# major we move to Db major
rather than C# major and go up a fifth to A flat etc. To work
out a flat keysignature, the order is Battle Ends And Down Goes
Charles' Father.
The flats in a key signature are one more than the name of the
key, so Bb Major has Bb and Eb , Db Major has BEADG flats.
To work out a minor key signature- If you want to work out the
key signature for C Minor, go up a minor third to Eb major and
that is your key signature ie B E A flats. Raise the seventh
note of the scale a semitone so when playing the harmonic minor
scale there will be no B flat, but it is in the key signature of
C Minor.
Hope this makes sense.

n the Hieronymuss Bosch's "The Garden of Earthly Delights"
painting (1480-1490 circa) there is some music written on the
butt of one of the characters in hell.
But how sounds this 15th Century melody?
Here is how is the 600-years-old butt music from hell sounds:

Enchanting!
Arranged in the style of the period (the music score on the butt
is just a short riff intended to be repeated) and played on
Lute, Harp, and Hurdy-Gurdy by James Spalink.
The melody is based on the transcription by Amelia Hamrick.
