New ISA Forums
By: Dicatto Date: January 14, 2013, 12:15 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
After a discussion with Casual and Schulz we've agreed it would
be better for us to move to a phpBB forum. It would give us
greater control of the forum security wise and style wise. At
the moment Casual is setting up the structure of our new forum
and I am facilitating the migration of topics. Once it is
complete I will announce the opening of the new forum. It is my
hope that this will bring us closer to being a fully
professional law group.

This happened about 3 hours ago. Also as I said above in my
post, I am facilitating the migration of topics to the new
forum, it requires me to have mod to be able to edit the locked
posts and copy code and text. Also under the new forums Sgt -
Mjr will have some mod privs under the newly organized
Supervisory Staff. Ranks SIN through CMS are now the Executive
Staff and will be admins.

This forum host runs an older version of SMF which is barely
customable and I have been looking for a new one for some time
and I have been using phpBB and I like that you can customize it
quite easy.

After we are done setting up everything on the new forums I will
gladly surrender my admin powers. Schulz approved all this and
said I had creative control under Casual, and since I've run a
crap load of forums in my life I offered to help Cas out and so
I've been power working right now setting up permissions,
groups, subboards, forum ranks, etc in the hopes of making us
more organized and looking more professional to potential
members.
Also I moved this to private as it is not appropriate to have
internal discussions shown to the public.

So.. you guys are working on getting a new forum while we are
having our sub-board in about a week?
Anyways, as no one told me nor even bothered taking my opinion I
won't be joining this project, I can't contribute in something I
don't even fully understand.

This is mainly to make my job easier trying to handle the
forums, this (****ty) outdated host doesn't allow me to
customize it at all and we have to live with a ugly forum with
mentally challenged settings I can't do anything good with.
With this new host using another kind of software which isn't an
outdated version of SMF but phpBB v3 it will be a lot easier
having our private sections at the forums which is good to have
even after receiving a subboard (for multiply reasons). I have
been thinking of replacing this forum with either a more updated
version of SMF (which I didn't find lurking around) and got a
phpBB one instead.
The idea got up in the mind when Schulz wanted a private section
for SGT+ aswell and it's quite a pain for me to handle
usergroups on this forum. Pretty much makes me mad having to
handle it.
As said this change will just make it a lot of easier for me and
it will look a lot more homely and I can probably add different
people handling the user groups aswell which isn't possible
since you need to be an admin here to control usergroups.
I will redirect the traffic from here to the new host if
everyone is okay with it aswell as when everything is set up,
you can register and copy the General Police Guide and such
over. All the codes
[li]
and such aren't working
though since I haven't set all the BBCodes up yet.

Subboard on CIT is great for recruitment and whatnot but to have
EVERYTHING over there isn't practical since you could only be
Mod there. Having our own forum and eventually website for our
group will set us apart from every single official law group and
give our members a more interactive and richer experience with
this group. I'm sorry you don't see that vision.

I'm totally ok with it, I mean, Casual has been taking care of
the forums for a long time and nobody says it's an easy job. So
if we can add something to make his job easier and perhaps more
enjoyable (because of new features), then why not? I perfectly
understand the intention, as well as I understand why Dicatto is
helping you, Casual, since you both have that kind of knowledge
on that area, it makes sense. In fact, thank you for your hard
work on doing it, I just checked it out and it looks pretty
fancy I must say and even more if it's gonna facilitate your
job.

Also about the subboards on CIT, I just checked them out and
trust me our new forums are way more organized than theirs.
Thave have one subboard with 33 pages of topics, can you imagine
having to search for things through 33 pages? With our forum
under the new organization things are categorized. However the
subboard have a purpose, because they are on the CIT forums
which hundreds of people view, it would serve well as a board
for recruitment and public relations, that's it. They may have a
base and tons of members but we have our own detailed forum, our
own training server plus a unique training system, and soon our
own website. Why would we want to be like every other law group?
