Junior Hockey on Cusp of a Revolution: Trying to Stop Fighting
By JOHN BRANCH - New York Times - Published: February 27, 2012
FRESNO, Calif. — Viewing fighting as a safety issue in light of
increasing concussion research, and unwilling to wait for the
National Hockey League to propose changes, USA Hockey and Hockey
Canada are seriously considering rules that would effectively
end fighting in nonprofessional leagues as soon as next season.
The rules would apply to dozens of leagues stretching from near
the Arctic Circle to south Texas. Even the three top junior
leagues in Canada, major fight-friendly feeder systems to the
N.H.L., are considering immediate ways to make fighting a
       rarity, not an expectation.
“The appetite is there,” said David Branch, the president of the
Canadian Hockey League, which oversees the Ontario Hockey
League, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the Western
Hockey League. “The time is certainly right to move forward.”
Hockey has long been a rare team sport that widely condones the
interruption of a game so two or more players can trade punches.
But for boys starting at age 16 or so, from the rough-and-tumble
junior leagues to the N.H.L., fighting has usually been
minimally penalized (often with five minutes in the penalty box)
and thus widely practiced, condoned, even celebrated.
That may change soon. The increased recognition of the long-term
dangers of brain trauma, across all sports, has forced hockey’s
leaders to consider ways to reduce blows to the head.

       Report: Buccaneers sign Vincent Jackson
       The Sports Xchange
       4:49 p.m. CDT, March 13, 2012
With the wide receiver market quickly taking shape, the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers landed one of the top prizes: Vincent Jackson.
The Buccaneers and the free-agent receiver reached a contract
agreement, Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune
       reported via Twitter.
ESPN and the San Diego Union-Tribune previously reported that
the Buccaneers and Jackson were in negotiations shortly after
the free agency period opened at 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday.
Already in the first hour of wheeling and dealing, the Chicago
Bears had acquired receiver Brandon Marshall from the Miami
Dolphins for two draft picks, and free-agent receiver Pierre
Garcon had announced that he'd reached agreement on a deal with
       the Washington Redskins.
Jackson, 29, has played seven seasons with the Chargers, topping
1,000 yards three times. After missing 11 games in 2010 due to a
contract dispute, he had 60 catches for 1,106 yards and a
       career-high-tying nine touchdowns in 2011.
He played last year with San Diego after the team gave him the
       franchise tag.
Tight end Kellen Winslow was the Buccaneers' leading
pass-catcher last year with 75 receptions. Mike Williams topped
the team with 771 receiving years, while Dezmon Briscoe had a
       team-high six touchdown catches.

Ex-Colts WR Garcon headed to Redskins
       The Sports Xchange
       4:38 p.m. CDT, March 13, 2012
The move to acquire the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming
draft, presumably to select quarterback Robert Griffin III, is
already paying dividends for the Washington Redskins.
Wide receiver Pierre Garcon, who spent four years with the
Indianapolis Colts, announced that he had reached a free agent
       agreement with the Redskins.
If Washington had hoped the prospect of playing with Griffin
would attract free agent wide receivers, the plan is already
       working.
“I wanted you all to hear it from me 1st before u saw it on the
news… I will be signing with the Washington Redskins and I'm
very excited about the opportunity in front of me,” he wrote on
       Facebook.
Garcon was a secondary target for Colts quarterback Peyton
Manning during the receiver's first three seasons, twice topping
700 receiving yards. Last year, with Manning missing the entire
season due to a neck injury, Garcon had a career-high 70
receptions for a career-high 947 yards. He matched his best
       total with six touchdowns.
Former Colts executive Bill Polian had said on ESPN earlier
Tuesday that he believed Garcon would get a big free agent
payday in part because of his age, 25.
Last season, the Redskins didn't have a 1,000-yard receiver.
Jabar Gaffney led the team with 947 receiving yards. The team's
top target, Santana Moss, missed four games with a broken left
       hand.

Bears not done with signings; Idonije inks 1-year deal
       Brad Biggs / Tribune reporter
       6:34 p.m. CDT, March 15, 2012
Phil Emery said Thursday afternoon the Chicago Bears could sign
a few players in the next couple days or turn the focus to the
       NFL draft next month.
Before the Bears comb the college ranks for talent, they brought
back a starter by announcing defensive end Israel Idonije is
coming back on a one-year contract.
Idonije, 31, said all season long that he hoped to return,
although he recevied a short-term deal that might not have
realized his goals in terms of a pay day. Idonije had five sacks
last season and said while the statistical production didn’t
meet his levels in 2010, he felt he played better.
The Bears attempted to sign Jeremy Mincey on Tuesday but just
before he accepted an offer from them he re-signed with the
Jaguars for four years. Some speculated the team would monitor
the situation with Kamerion Wimbley, who could be released by
the Raiders. But now it looks more likely the team will look to
select a defensive end near with one of their first picks and
work a rookie into a rotation with Idonije and Julius Peppers.
That leaves two more Bears players on the open market that the
Bears may be pursuing – safety Craig Steltz and cornerback Corey
Graham, both core players on special teams.
“This is a very interesting period because there's been a lot of
signings,” Emery said in a conference call Thursday afternoon.
“There's still players, our own or UFAs, that we're considering.
But it's almost hit that point of, take a breath, sit back and
see who has not been signed, re-evaluate what you have and move
       forward from there.
“Don't be surprised that we add a few more players here in the
next few days and don't be surprised if we don't because after
we take that breath we may realize that it's best to start
focusing on the draft to meet our needs.”
Idonije had a base salary of $2.4 million last season. He signed
a two-year extension in 2009 that included $7 million in new
       money.

       Mohammad El Akkari scores 113
Mohammad El Akkari joined the exclusive 100-point-game club when
he scored 113 in a Lebanese league game Tuesday.
Akkari, a 27-year-old guard for Moutahed of Tripoli who went in
averaging only 7.6 points in 23 games, made 40-of-69 shots,
including 32-of-59 3-pointers, according to fibaasia.net. He had
       only one free throw.
"Thank God for this performance. I think it's all a result of my
practice," Akkari said, according to fibaasia.net. "I also want
to thank my coach for letting me play that long and all my
       teammates for helping."
Records show that this was the first 100-point performance in an
official game in any league of the FIBA Asia National
       Federations.

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino had female passenger on motorcycle
       ride that ended in crash
       By Associated Press,
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino had a female
passenger with him during a weekend motorcycle ride that ended
with a crash that sent him to the hospital, according to a
       police report released Thursday.
Petrino was with former Arkansas volleyball player and current
       Razorback Foundation fundraiser Jessica Dorrell.
Petrino, who is married with four children, didn’t mention he
had a passenger during a news conference on Tuesday, two days
after Sunday’s accident, and a school statement that day quoted
Petrino’s family as saying “no other individuals” were involved.
The 51-year-old Petrino also said Tuesday that he had spent the
day with his wife, Becky, at a lake and was going for an evening
ride. Dorrell, 25, didn’t immediately return a message seeking
comment. A Petrino spokesman, Zack Higbee, declined immediate
       comment.
