76ers Pick Up Option on Doug Collins
The Philadelphia 76ers have picked up their option on head coach
Doug Collins’ contract for the 2013-14 season. Collins was named
the 23rd head coach in franchise history on May 21, 2010 and has
led the Sixers to the playoffs in each of his two seasons.
“Doug Collins has repeatedly proven that he is one of the best
head coaches in the NBA and we consider ourselves very fortunate
to have him here in Philadelphia,” said Sixers Managing Owner
Josh Harris. “We look forward to Doug’s continued leadership,
passion and dedication to this organization and our fans, and
know that he will work tirelessly in order to put our team in
the best position to succeed every time they step on the court.”

How Serious is Eric Gordon’s Knee Injury?
It’s tough to tell what to make of the news release that came
out from the New Orleans Hornets this afternoon. Eric Gordon is
experiencing soreness in the same knee had just had surgically
repaired.
“Gordon will have limited participation in training camp due to
soreness in his right knee,” the statement reads. “Eric
experienced soreness in his right knee while participating in
voluntary workouts with the team at the end of the summer.
Gordon underwent arthroscopic surgery last season on his right
knee and returned to full strength at the end of the season and
during the Olympic try-outs.
“The team is taking a cautious approach with Eric to give him
the best chance to be ready for the season,” General Manager
Dell Demps said.
So what this means for the Hornets is a mystery. When you have
“sore” and “surgically-repaired” in the same sentence, it is
usually not a good thing.
The Hornets matched the max offer Gordon received from the
Phoenix Suns, making him the co-cornerstone of their rebuilding,
along with No. 1 pick Anthony Davis.
Gordon played in only 9 games last season after being acquired
as the centerpiece of the Chris Paul trade.

Anderson Varejao: ‘I’m not Flopping Anymore’
News that the NBA is likely to adopt a policy that cracks down
on flopping — the art of exaggerating contact to draw an
offensive foul — does not matter much to Anderson Varejao.
“I’m not flopping anymore,” Varejao said. “I used to flop a
little bit.”
A little bit? And the sun rises every day, a little bit, too.
According to NBA spokesman Tim Frank, the crackdown is likely to
involve post-game review of plays — potentially using fines to
enforce the rule prohibiting the art of extreme exaggeration of
contact. A final determination by the competition committee has
not yet been made.
“It could be [a good thing] when it’s ridiculous, when the guy
really flops,” Varejao said. “The referees, they’re not going to
see everything. Sometimes a guy flops and they call a foul. I
think when it’s really, really bad, I think it’s a good idea.”
As for how the rule changes might affect Varejao’s game? It
doesn’t matter because he doesn’t flop, right?
“Oh, I don’t know, let’s wait and see how it’s going to be,” he
said.

Peyton Manning part-owner in NBA

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning isn't allowed to own a
piece of a football team per NFL rules, but that doesn't mean he
can't own a piece of another team in another sport.
Sources have confirmed to ESPN.com that Manning is part of the
proposed ownership group led by Robert Pera, who agreed to buy
the Memphis Grizzlies from Michael Heisley for about $350
million this summer.
The news of the involvement of Manning, who played collegiately
at the University of Tennessee, was first reported by Chris
Vernon of ESPN Radio Memphis. The ownership stake is actually in
the name of Manning's wife, Ashley, but one source confirmed
that Peyton Manning is involved. The Manning's stake in the team
and how much they paid for it is not known.
"While my focus is on playing quarterback for the Denver
Broncos, I look forward to watching her become involved with her
hometown team," Peyton Manning said.
Ashley Manning is very excited to commit to the Grizzlies' new
ownership group.
"As a native of Memphis, it was important to me that the
Grizzlies remain in Tennessee and continue to have a positive
impact on the community," she said.
Manning's involvement will not be a conflict for the quarterback
with the NFL, according to league spokesman Greg Aiello.
Through last week, Manning has earned more than $178 million on
the field and tens of millions of dollars more off it as the
most popular endorser in the NFL.
Since Pera agreed to the deal, shares of his company Ubiquiti
Networks has been hard hit. On a single day in August, Pera lost
$365 million on paper when the company's stock plummeted. Shares
since have rebounded modestly.
In recent months, Pera has added local partners, including
AutoZone founder J.R. "Pitt" Hyde and financier Staley Cates,
who were minority owners under Heisley. In September, Pera
scored pop star and actor Justin Timberlake on the ownership
roster. Sources also confirmed Thursday that former NBA player
Penny Hardaway -- who grew up in Memphis and played at Memphis
State -- has joined the group.
A source with knowledge of the sale told ESPN.com's Marc Stein
that the transfer of ownership from Heisley to Pera and his
high-profile partners remains on course to be approved by the
start of the regular season later this month. The NBA Board of
Governors is scheduled to have its meeting Oct. 24-25 in New
York City.
Grizzlies guard Mike Conley said Tuesday that the ownership
change will not affect the players themselves or change what
they have to do on the court. But they all have heard about
Pera, the former Apple engineer who left in 2005 to start
Ubiquiti Networks, a communications technology company that
makes WiFi networking equipment.
"We've heard a lot of good things about him, and his intentions
are all good," Conley said. "I know the city of Memphis should
be excited. As a team, we are excited. It's going to be a
different expectation for us, and we're just looking forward to
taking it on."

Detroit Pistons to Sign Flynn, Williams?
Jonny Flynn and Terrence Williams understand the difficulty of
their quest and the possibility that their Detroit Pistons
tryouts might benefit them more as auditions for other teams,
not the one for which they are toiling in training camp.
The Pistons have 15 players signed to guaranteed contracts,
enough to fill a roster, and the truth is that Flynn and
Williams, who were teammates briefly last year, will have a
difficult time convincing the team to give up on one of those
players, assuming no trades or injuries.
Still, the two 2009 draft lottery picks who have become NBA
nomads since then looked at the Pistons, with their thin
backcourt, and saw opportunity.

Dwight Howard Fitting in With Lakers
Dwight Howard left his new team’s practice facility Wednesday in
much the same way he had in the three weeks before: off the
court that sits beneath all those retired jerseys of Lakers
legends, past the friendly staffer at the front who’s been
predicting — no, requesting — between 65 and 70 wins this season
and into the passenger seat of the black Escalade that awaited
him just outside the door en route to Nash St. and the 405.
Another successful session at training camp was in the books,
with Howard yet another step closer to his official return from
April back surgery and the notion that these new-look Lakers
will be nearly unstoppable seeming more real by the day. And
Howard, who hoarded the NBA spotlight so mercilessly in the nine
months that led to his mid-August trade from Orlando, continued
a seamless transition that should have the rest of the league
even more scared than before.
From the local Clippers squad that is a distant second-fiddle
once again in Los Angeles to the other 28 teams that already had
plenty to worry about with the Heat and Thunder, Lakers
opponents needed this to go very differently. They needed Howard
to take the diva route, to declare the Lakers his team and act
as if he couldn’t be comfortable in a place where he wasn’t,
well, center of attention.

Williams Looking to Make An Impact
Derrick Williams spent most of his rookie season in Minnesota
trying to find his way.
With a shortened training camp, precious little practice time
once the season began and up to five games a week, it was
perhaps the most challenging season ever for rookies. The No. 2
overall draft choice had to do a lot of searching – for the
right times to be aggressive in Rick Adelman’s offense, for the
correct reads on defense when the ball rotated quickly, for
consistent playing time to get into a rhythm on both ends.
On the first day of training camp, Williams’ intensity and
commitment on both ends stood out perhaps more than any other
development on a team with only five players on the roster from
a year ago.

Knicks Officially Sign Wallace
Rasheed Wallace is old. His career seemed over. He’s brash and
outspoken. But he was also a damn good player who knows the
game. And now he’s officially a member of the New York Knicks.
Knicks Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations and
General Manager Glen Grunwald announced today that the team has
signed the free agent forward/center to a contract. According to
the New York Post, the deal is for one year, $1.7 million.
He last played for Boston in 2009-10, averaging 9.0 points, 4.1
rebounds and 1.0 assists over 22.5 minutes in 79 regular season
games (13 starts) and 6.1 points and 3.0 rebounds over 17.1
minutes in 24 postseason games (one start). He was originally
selected by Washington in the first round (fourth overall) of
1995 NBA Draft, following his sophomore season at the University
of North Carolina.

Aldridge Not Thinking About Free Agency
Portland Trail Blazers All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge says
that he is “fine” with the team’s direction.
The basketball intelligentsia has become particularly adept in
recent years at sniffing out All-Star players who might be
disgruntled with their lot in NBA life. It was bound to happen
after LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony, Deron Williams,
Dwight Howard, and Chris Paul, among others, opted to leave in
free agency, (directly or indirectly) threatened to leave in
free agency, or exercised their leverage as stars to find a new
team that provided a better opportunity to win in the
short-term.
Even though he has three full years remaining on a 5-year
contract, Portland Trail Blazers All-Star forward LaMarcus
Aldridge has found his name creeping onto the list of star
players who could seek new digs in the relatively near future.
To be clear, the evidence at this point is entirely
circumstantial: the Blazers are entering a rebuilding mode with
a new coach and new GM, Aldridge has yet to advance in the
playoffs, he’s entering his prime without a bonafide No. 2 star
alongside him and he plays for a small-market team. Each of
those has been a warning light in the recent past.
But Aldridge stuck totally to the script at media day on Monday,
acknowledging that it’s a new roster that will require patience
while expressing no unhappiness with his role as the main
veteran on an incredibly young team.

Jannero Pargo Suffers Left Rib Injury
The Wizards signed Jannero Pargo to help reduce the loss of John
Wall, but the veteran point guard has already been forced to sit
because of a left rib injury.
Pargo was held out of practice on Friday and the team scrimmage
the night before after developing some soreness in his
midsection while making a routine cross-court pass two days ago.
The 32-year-old Pargo said he would have an X-ray later today
and be further evaluated on Saturday.
