Pistons trade Gordon to Bobcats for Maggette

The Pistons traded former Bull Ben Gordon and a future
first-round draft choice to the Bobcats on Tuesday in a exchange
for forward Corey Maggette, the teams announced.
The draft pick is believed to be a 2013 first-round pick,
although the Pistons would retain the pick if it falls in the
lottery.
Gordon, 29, averaged 12.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists and
26.9 minutes in 52 games, including 21 starts, last season. He
is scheduled to make $12.4 million in 2012-13 and has a player
option worth $13.2 million for 2013-14.
Maggette, 32, averaged 15 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists
in 32 games with the Bobcats last season but played in just 32
games. Maggette, a Fenwick High School product, is entering the
final year of a contract that will pay him $10.9 million.
“We welcome Corey Maggette to our organization in a transaction
that provides us with a veteran scorer and defender in addition
to increased roster flexibility moving forward,” said Joe
Dumars, the Pistons' president of basketball operations.

Charlotte Bobcats Unveil New Uniforms and Color Scheme
The Charlotte Bobcats today unveiled new uniforms and a new
color treatment for the team’s logos. The primary and secondary
logo marks remain the same, with a new color scheme that
includes a darker shade of blue and more cool gray than before,
while also introducing light blue and reducing the amount of
orange.
“This is the culmination of a nearly two-year process and we are
delighted to share our new look with our fans,” said Bobcats
Sports & Entertainment President & COO Fred Whitfield. “These
colors are deeply rooted in this region and we believe our fans
will be as enthused by them as we are.”
The white home jersey features the word “Cats” on the front in
navy with light blue trim, with the player’s number off-center
underneath it in light blue with navy trim. The v-neck design
features orange trim around the neck and shoulders. The side
panel is navy with light blue and cool gray pinstripes, with a
tri-color border of orange, white and light blue. The back of
the jersey features the “Forward Facing Cat” secondary logo at
the top, with the player’s name in navy and his number in the
same light blue with navy trim as the front. The shorts feature
the team’s “Crown C” secondary logo on the side of each leg with
a pair of triangular side panels using the same colors as the
top.
The front of the blue road jersey features the word “Charlotte”
and the player’s number both in white with light blue trim. The
v-neck design features orange trim around the neck and
shoulders. The side panel is light blue with cool gray and navy
pinstripes, with a tri-color border of orange, navy and white.
The back of the jersey again features the “Forward Facing Cat”
secondary logo at the top, with the player’s name and number in
the same white with light blue trim as the front. Like the home
uniform, the shorts feature the team’s “Crown C” secondary logo
on the side of each leg with a pair of triangular side panels
using the same colors as the top.
Made by adidas, the NBA’s official uniform provider, the new
jersey is part of the NBA Revolution 30 series, which was
introduced two seasons ago. The uniforms are 30 percent lighter
and incorporate the company’s CLIMACOOL fabric which dries twice
as fast as previous NBA uniforms.
The changes to the color scheme and logo were designed by
Bobcats Sports & Entertainment’s in-house marketing and creative
services departments.

Jason Kidd to join Knicks; signs multi-year deal
The New York Knicks have agreed to sign point guard Jason Kidd
to a multi-year deal, according to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein. The
deal is worth $9 million.
The Knicks are also expected to match the three-year, $20
million dollar offer that the Houston Rockets offered guard
Jeremy Lin.
Kidd was also looking at the Brooklyn Nets and staying with the
Mavericks in recent days, according to reports.
The contract can’t be signed until July 11, which is the first
day new NBA contracts can be signed.
Kidd, 39, will be entering his 21st NBA season in 2012-2013. He
is second all-time in NBA history in assists and steals, and
third in three-point field goals made.

Lakers to acquire Steve Nash in sign-and-trade deal with the
Suns
The two-time MVP brings a pass-first mentality to a team in need
of leadership at point guard. He's also an above average
shooter, making 43% of his three-pointers during his career.
The Lakers added a point guard of the future by taking one of
the best from the last two decades, plucking Steve Nash from the
Phoenix Suns for a slew of draft picks.
Nash, a two-time MVP, brings instant life to a Lakers offense
that was moribund most of last season, likely pushing them into
the upper reaches of the Western Conference, yet again.
It took eight months, but the Lakers finally used the $9-million
traded-player exception they acquired from Dallas for Lamar
Odom.
Did they ever.
Nash, 38, receives a three-year deal worth about $27 million.
The Lakers gave up first-round picks next year and in 2015. They
also gave up second-round picks next year and in 2014. The deal
will not become official until July 11, when a moratorium on NBA
business is lifted.
Nash was a free agent after spending the last eight seasons in
Phoenix and was offered a three-year deal with the Toronto
Raptors for about $36 million.
The New York Knicks were also chasing the services of the
creative pass-first point guard who also has solid touch from
three-point range, averaging 39% last season and 43% for his
career.
Nash made $11.7 million last season and averaged 12.5 points and
10.7 assists for the Suns. He has played 16 NBA seasons.
Steve Blake has two more years on his contract and is penciled
in as Nash’s backup. Ramon Sessions will not be re-signed after
declining a one-year player option for $4.55 million last month.

Rockets to trade Lowry to Raptors for first-round pick
The exodus of Rockets point guards continued Thursday with the
Rockets sending Kyle Lowry to the Toronto Raptors for a package
built around a future first-round draft pick, a person with
knowledge of the deal said.
The pick will have limited protections, but was called “a likely
lottery pick.” Protections, still being discussed, could keep
the pick from coming in the upper echelon of the draft. In an
unusual clause in the deal, the Rockets also will not get the
pick next season if the Raptors’ season keeps the pick from
getting too late in the draft.
The Rockets will get forward Gary Forbes in the deal, according
to a person with knowledge of the trade, but the deal was made
to get the pick, rather than the player. The trade will not
become official until July 11.
For the Rockets, the thinking was that the pick could be more
likely to bring the sort of star player they have sought, either
through the draft or by trading the pick, than they had found
when offering Lowry in trades.
With Goran Dragic agreeing to sign with the Suns on Wednesday,
and the chances of getting Jeremy Lin considered slim, the trade
of Lowry represents a major change of direction for the Rockets.
The Rockets made Lin an offer on Wednesday and are still in
talks with Lin, according to a person with knowledge of the
process, but the Knicks are expected to match any offer he
receives should he agree to sign an offer sheet.
For now, the Rockets’ only point guards are Courtney Fortson, a
D-League player signed to a non-guaranteed contract last season,
and Scott Machado, who was undrafted last month but signed to
the summer league team.

Jamal Crawford, Chauncey Billups to sign with Clippers
The Clippers were informed on Thursday that guards Jamal
Crawford and Chauncey Billups intend to sign contracts with the
team when the NBA’s moratorium period is lifted for free agents
to sign deals, according to NBA executives who were not
authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
Crawford, an unrestricted free agent who opted out of his $5.2
million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers, has been
offered a spot by the Clippers. He is expected to sign a
three-year, $15.7 million contract, according to the executives.
Billups, who played in just 20 games last season with the
Clippers before suffering a season-ending left Achilles tendon
surgery, will sign a one-year deal that could be worth up to
$4.3 million if he reaches bonuses, the executives said.
With Crawford and Billups reaching deals with the Clippers, L.A.
cancelled the visit they had planned for free agent shooting
guard Ray Allen on Friday.
At 6-5, the 32-year-old Crawford gives the Clippers the size in
the backcourt they lacked last season.
Crawford averaged 13.9 points per game last season in Portland,
and has averaged 15.3 points over his 12-year career. He shot
30.9% from three-point range last season, and has averaged 34.8%
over his career.
Crawford, who has played for five teams, was the NBA’s sixth man
of the year in 2010 with the Atlanta Hawks. He’ll probably start
for the Clippers until Billups returns from his injury.
Billups, who averaged 15 points for the Clippers last season, is
hopeful that he’ll be back sometime in December.
Update (2:55 p.m.): Crawford's contract with the Clippers will
run for four-years and will be worth $21.7 million, according to
an executive familiar with the deal.

contract offer[/size][/b]
The Rockets brought Jeremy Lin back to town for a visit on
Wednesday. Getting him to stay in Houston will be considerably
more difficult and might have gotten tougher even as they met.
The Rockets on Wednesday made Lin an offer similar in total
value to the contract Goran Dragic turned down. But Lin is a
restricted free agent — giving the Knicks the opportunity to
match any offer he receives — and New York received extra
motivation to hang on to Lin while he met with Rockets general
manager Daryl Morey and coach Kevin McHale.
Steve Nash, the veteran guard the Knicks had targeted, agreed to
a sign-and-trade deal that will send him to the Lakers in
exchange for a pair of first-round and pair of second-round
picks. Nash, who was also considering the Raptors, Mavericks and
Knicks, will receive a three-year, $27 million contract and a
chance to play for a contender a short flight from his family in
Phoenix.
The Knicks received more reasons to keep Lin. The Rockets will
try to make that difficult.
High stakes
The stakes could be very high. The Rockets set their sights on
Lin, a point guard they waived after 12 days in training camp
last year, when they failed to reach an agreement with Dragic.
A person with knowledge of the negotiations with Dragic said
that he would not be back with the Rockets and that Dragic has
offers that greatly exceed their offer. Dragic visited with the
Suns on Tuesday. He is also getting interest from the Raptors
and Bobcats.
Besides failing to come to an agreement with Dragic, the Rockets
withdrew their qualifying offer to Courtney Lee. The Bulls also
can match the Rockets’ offer for restricted free-agent center
Omer Asik.
If Lin agrees, the Rockets would structure his contract
similarly to Asik’s, paying $5 million the first season and $5.2
million in the second season before jumping dramatically in the
2013-14 season.
The new, more punitive luxury tax begins that season. For the
Rockets, the contract would count against the salary cap and
luxury tax figures each year for only the average salary during
the contract.
If the Knicks match, however, it would count the actual value
paid each season toward the salary cap and luxury tax. Though
New York has seemed determined to match any offer sheet Lin
signs, the contract is structured in such a way that it would
push the Knicks that season to the luxury tax threshold with
just four players: Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire, Tyson
Chandler and Lin.
Knicks determined
The Knicks had seemed prepared for that possibility, choosing to
pursue veteran point guards who could help mentor the
23-year-old Lin. With Nash unavailable, the Knicks could pursue
Jason Kidd for that role.
The Rockets still have Kyle Lowry after draft-night trades fell
through but still could be left searching, with the backcourt
that finished the season — Dragic and Lee — likely gone and Lin,
the point guard who got away, an increasingly difficult
challenge to get back.

Williams, Howard Talked Brooklyn in 2008
LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh first talked about the
possibility of playing together when they were teammates for the
gold-medal Olympic team in 2008. Turns out, they weren’t the
only ones in Beijing plotting to form a super team.
Deron Williams said he and Dwight Howard first discussed the
possibility of teaming together four years ago in China. With
the Orlando Magic talking about a proposed trade to send Howard
to Williams and the Brooklyn Nets, that dream could be closer to
becoming reality.
“It was just talk about that point four years ago,” Williams
said. “[Brooklyn] definitely intrigues [Howard]. Brooklyn is
going to be huge. That factored into my decision [to re-sign
with the Nets]. This is a place that hasn’t had a [sports]
franchise since the ’50s. This is a city that wants basketball
there, and then the arena is going to be great.”

Davis Added to Hornets Summer League
The New Orleans Hornets have added top overall NBA draft choice
Anthony Davis to their Las Vegas summer league team.
Davis was in Las Vegas last week for U.S. Olympic team tryouts,
but a sore left ankle hampered his already slim chances to make
the 12-man roster for the London Games.
The 6-foot-11 Davis is now an Olympic alternate and is available
to join New Orleans’ summer league squad for its five-game
schedule running from July 15-21.
