Celtics-Grizzlies Trade: Boston Swaps Fab Melo for Memphis'
Donte Greene
STEPHEN BABB/Bleacher Report
AUGUST 15, 2013
If you thought re-gifting Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason
Terry to the Brooklyn Nets would be the Boston Celtics' biggest
trade of the summer, well, you were probably right. But we now
know it wasn't their last trade of the summer.
The Celtics announced on Thursday that they've traded 2012
first-round pick Fab Melo to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange
for forward Donte Greene.
Boston took Melo with the 22nd pick hoping to bolster its front
line defensively. In return for the 23-year-old center, the
organization receives a stretch 4 with just two non-guaranteed
seasons remaining on his contract (for a total of just
approximately $2.2 million).
Celtics bail on Fab Melo, who struggled to duck the doorway. But
now they duck the tax.
— Tom Haberstroh (@tomhaberstroh) August 15, 2013
Greene's a stretch 4 in theory anyway. He made an impressive 38
percent of his three-point attempts in 2009-10, a season in
which he actually started 50 games for the Sacramento Kings.
Since then, however, Greene's minutes have declined in each of
the last two seasons, and his accuracy from range has plummeted
to sub-.300 territory.
That's not an encouraging trend, but there's something to be
said for a change of scenery. If the Celtics wind up in a
full-on rebuild this season, Greene may find a more significant
opportunity than any of us is bargaining for.
In Melo, Memphis receives a project with the potential to be a
solid rim protector. He played in only six games for the Celtics
last season, so there's still no telling what he can do in the
NBA. But he was second in the NBA Development League with 3.2
blocks per game for the Maine Red Claws, so it's a good bet the
7-footer's calling card will be rebounding and protecting the
paint.
It's hard to say who got the better of this deal, or whether it
will even matter in the long-term. What it says for Boston's
short-term fate may be the more interesting takeaway. Is this
merely an aftershock to the Nets deal, or is it a precursor to
something more scintillating up Danny Ainge's sleeve?

Dwyane Wade sells Chicago town house
By Bob Goldsborough, Special to the Tribune - January 23, 2014
Dwyane Wade, a Chicago native and major part of three Miami Heat
NBA championship teams, has sold his four-bedroom town house in
Chicago's River West neighborhood for $1.66 million.
Wade, 32, recently became engaged to actress Gabrielle Union. He
also owns a six-bedroom, 12,520-square-foot mansion in Miami
Beach, Fla., that he bought in late 2010 for $10.6 million.
Built in 2000 and fronting the Chicago River, the
3,476-square-foot town house has 31/2 baths, hardwood floors,
granite countertops, a custom wet bar and a balcony. The new
owners, who are not celebrities, own the home across the street.
In November, Wade listed the town house for $1.8 million and
closed on the deal Jan. 8. Wade bought the town home in 2009 for
$1.4 million.
Wade's listing agent, Susan Miner of Premier Relocation, said
the home sold "at an acceptable price, given the market."
"This custom home is a rare gem in a desirable gated community
with stunning river and city views," she said. "Working with the
Wade (family) was a pleasure, and we hope to see him back in
Chicago soon."
Wade was not the only professional athlete who owned a home in
the development. Dallas Mavericks forward Shawn Marion, a
Waukegan native, owns a town house nearby that he bought in
mid-2004 for $985,000, while Chicago Blackhawks defenseman
Niklas Hjalmarsson paid $1.32 million in late 2010 for a town
house.

Michael Jordan earned more in 2013 than nearly any active
athlete
By Austin Knoblauch - 12:16 p.m. CST, February 28, 2014
Michael Jordan played in his last NBA game more than a decade
ago, but that doesn't mean his earning power has waned at all.
According to Forbes, Jordan was the highest paid retired athlete
in 2013, earning an estimated $90 million. Among current
athletes, only boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. made more money last
year than Jordan, Forbes reported.
What was the catalyst behind Jordan's impressive earning power?
Shoes.
Nike's Air Jordan line of footwear continues to sell like it's
the summer of 1991. The Air Jordan 10 "Powder Blue" sneaker went
on sale Saturday and tallied total first-day sales of $35
million. As Forbes pointed out, that figure nearly eclipses the
yearly sales total of $40 million that Adidas received on
Derrick Rose's signature footwear.
Nike made $300 million on LeBron James' line of shoes in 2013,
according to Forbes, but that comes nowhere near the $2.25
billion the company raked in for Jordan's brand. Jordan's
estimated $90 million cut is more single-year money than he ever
earned during his playing career, which Forbes said peaked at
$80 million in 1997-98.
Forbes reported that increased sales of the Air Jordan line have
led to the big payout for the former Chicago Bulls great. One in
every two basketball shoes sold in the U.S. comes from the
Jordan label, and Nike continues to aggressively push the brand
-- it opened it's first Jordan-only brand store in New York
earlier this month.
