O.J. Mayo Hurts Shooting Hand
O.J. Mayo sat out the Dallas Mavericks’ intrasquad scrimmage
Saturday night because of a cut on his shooting hand suffered in
a freak accident during the team’s trip to Europe.
“He slipped on some steps and fell down and actually took a big
chunk of skin off of his hand,” coach Rick Carlisle said on ESPN
Dallas 103.3 FM. “Ninety-eight out of a hundred NBA players
wouldn’t have played in the Barcelona game, but he wanted to
play. He struggled shooting the ball, and I think that was the
reason.”
The Mavs expect expect Mayo to play in Monday’s preseason game
against the Rockets.

Lawson Close to Extension with Nuggets?
For months, Denver Nuggets guard Ty Lawson has voiced confidence
that he’ll receive a contract extension that will keep him from
hitting free agency at season’s end. Despite the fact that a
deal still isn’t done with the Oct. 31 deadline looming, Lawson
believes something will get worked out.
“I’m still confident,” Lawson said to HOOPSWORLD. “My agent is
working with Masai Ujiri and Josh Kroenke so I feel like in the
next couple of weeks something will get done. We’ll see.”
According to sources close to the situation, the Nuggets’
current offer is in the neighborhood of $44 million over four
years, which is just south of what it will likely take to get a
deal done before free agency. The 2013 free agency class isn’t
going to be overflowing with starting-caliber point guards like
Lawson. On the open market, he could very easily receive an
offer in the $12-13 million range per year.
So, while the Nuggets may need to up their offer a bit, the two
sides do appear to be close enough to where an agreement can be
made before the deadline.

Can Gortat Shine without Steve Nash?
Enough scorers have enjoyed career seasons next to Steve Nash to
question whether Marcin Gortat will be the same offensive player
without him around.
According to HoopData, Gortat was assisted on 78.6 percent of
his buckets in 2010-11 with the Suns and 79.6 percent last year,
and a third of his 2011-12 plays came as the roll man (more than
any other play type), per mySynergySports, a play on which he
scored 1.23 points per play (10th in the league). Thus some
wonder whether he can repeat his superb 15.4 ppg season on 55.5
percent shooting with Nash no longer around to set him up.
“Basically, I am going to try and prove that I can play without
him,” Gortat said. “There was a lot of talk in the offseason
about how I’m going to play and how I’m going to handle the
whole situation without him.
“This a new team with a lot of new faces,” Gortat said.
“Obviously, one of the most important faces is gone — Steve
Nash. So it will be a new team. But I’m definitely looking
forward to playing without him. I think we have a big chance to
make the playoffs, and that’s going to be our main focus.”

Source: Bynum has Routine Injections
According to a source: (Andrew) Bynum will have a planned
injection as part of his ongoing treatment on knee to get him on
court asap. Not a setback.
(Sixers coach) Collins said at practice that Bynum “said he’s
feeling better. He’s due for another injection and then
eventually up to running on treadmil.

Ex-Bulls, Ex-White Sox, NBA announcer Jim Durham dies at 65

BRISTOL, Conn. — ESPN radio announcer Jim Durham, who called NBA
games for the network, has died. He was 65.
Durham announced for the Bulls from 1973 to 1991 and also called
White Sox games in 1989 and 1990.
ESPN said Monday that Durham died over the weekend at his home
in Tomball, Texas. A cause of death was not announced.
In 2011, Durham received the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the
Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for his contributions
to the sport.
Durham was the lead play-by-play commentator for NBA games on
ESPN Radio since its inception in 1996. His last assignment for
ESPN was Tuesday’s season opener between Boston and Miami.
A Chicago native, Durham called Bulls games during Michael
Jordan’s first seven seasons. His most memorable call might have
been Jordan’s shot over Craig Ehlo to defeat the Cavaliers in
the 1989 playoffs.
He also served as a broadcaster for the Dallas Mavericks and
Houston Astros.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, their three children,
Patrick, Richard and Tracy and several grandchildren.

me," said Durham when he was honored by basketball's Hall of
Fame in 2011. "That was the team that gave a chance to a
26-year-old kid out of Bloomington, Illinois no one had ever
heard of and put him on the air, and 38 years later, here I am.”

For 18 seasons, Jim Durham’s voice was synonymous with Chicago
Bulls basketball.
So when the news that Durham had passed away suddenly over the
weekend at the age of 65 spread throughout the team’s front
office on Monday, it was a shock for many of those who had
worked with him over the years.
“I was so sorry to learn this morning of Jim Durham’s untimely
passing,” said Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. “Jim was the
voice of the Bulls for 18 years and he was the best at calling a
basketball game I ever heard.”
An Illinois native, Durham joined the Bulls in 1973 as
television and radio commentator, a role he would enjoy until
1991, when he left to join ESPN following the team’s first world
championship. Durham leaves behind his wife, Helen, their three
children, Patrick, Richard and Tracy, and several grandchildren.
Durham was honored by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of
Fame in 2011 with the Curt Gowdy Media Award and is widely
regarded as one of the great announcers in basketball history.
“I loved the energy he brought to our broadcasts, the way he
painted a word picture of what was happening on the court which
made you feel like you were there, and his sense of humor,” said
Reinsdorf. “Most importantly, Jim was my friend and I will miss
the conversations we had about the NBA, life in general, and his
favorite baseball team… the Chicago White Sox. On behalf of the
entire Chicago Bulls organization, my deepest condolences to
Helen and his entire family. He will be greatly missed.”
“I am stunned. Devastated,” said Executive Vice
President-Business Operations Steve Schanwald. “I loved that
man, we all did here, and of course Jim was the best in the
business at his craft. No one brought the game more to life,
brought more energy and humor to the broadcasts or painted a
more vivid picture of what was happening on the floor than Jim
did.
“I will miss his company and our conversations a lot,” added
Schanwald. “But I will always be grateful for our friendship and
the times we shared together. Heartfelt condolences to Helen and
his family.”

NBA Downgrades Bradley Beal’s Flagrant Foul
Bradley Beal was shoved to the floor by Brandon Jennings and
ejected by the referees, but there were no further repercussions
for his hard foul on Milwaukee Bucks guard Monta Ellis with 23.7
seconds remaining of the Wizards’ 101-91 loss on Friday at
Verizon Center.
After reviewing the incident on Saturday, the NBA downgraded
Beal’s infraction to a flagrant foul penalty one. Under league
bylaws, Beal was eligible to get suspended and receive a fine of
up to $50,000 after he was assessed a flagrant foul penalty two
– unsportsmanlike contact defined as “unnecessary and excessive”
– and an automatic ejection in the loss to Milwaukee.
But he didn’t get a suspension and his punishment has been
reduced. A player receives two points for a penalty two flagrant
foul and one point for a penalty one flagrant foul. Exceeding
five points during the season will lead to an automatic one-game
suspension and further suspensions for each additional flagrant
foul.

Jimmer’s Time Nearing an End in Sacramento?
Amar’e Stoudemire hasn’t been made available to the media since
he injured his knee in a preseason game in Montreal on Oct. 19,
but apparently he is progressing.
“He’s not on the bench sitting, but he’s back there getting
treatment every day,’’ Woodson said. “I don’t think he’s on
crutches at all. He’s walking all right. I just see him on the
table getting treatment. I ask him how he’s doing and I keep
moving.’’
Stoudemire might not be able to play until late December.

Injuries Becoming Theme in Minnesota
So now we wait until Sunday to find out how bad Chase Budinger’s
knee is.
Yet another injury. This time it was Budinger, who started in
place of Brandon Roy, who went down. It happened mid-way through
the fourth quarter, when Budinger got his foot stuck and his
left knee twisted in a scrum following a blocked shot at the
Wolves offensive end.
Already Kevin Love (hand) and Ricky Rubio (knee) are out. J.J.
Barea (mid-foot sprain) missed the last two games; his status
for Monday’s game in Dallas won’t be known until Sunday. Sunday
is also when Budinger will have an MRI on his knee. But it is
inconceivable that he would be ready to play any time soon.
Should neither Roy nor Barea be available Monday, the Wolves
would be playing without five of the top seven players on their
roster.

The Raptors Struggling without Kyle Lowry
“It’s just the beginning of the season,” Bargnani said after the
Toronto Raptors’ fifth loss in the season’s first six games, a
worse-than-the-score-looked 93-83 loss to the Philadelphia
76ers. “So I have to stay positive. I have to believe it’s going
to change. We’re going to fix that. I’m not going to be negative
after [six] games.”
Now, that is entirely reasonable. The season just started, and
to lose all faith now would make the remaining 76 games a rather
daunting prospect. Plus, the Raptors have a built-in excuse:
Kyle Lowry, the team’s new point guard who was so good in
Toronto’s first three games, has sat out the last 10 quarters
because of a sprained ankle. Lowry is quite clearly the Raptors’
best player, and losing your best player is, well, the opposite
of helpful.
The Raptors, meanwhile, look as if they are marrying their
identity to Lowry. Without him, there has been none of the
defensive grime that defined the team last year even when things
were going poorly, as they so often were. And, for all intents
and purposes, the team that played on Saturday night was the
rough equivalent of last year’s team, plus rookies Jonas
Valanciunas and Terrence Ross. Yet, too often the Raptors are
acquiescing to adversity.
