       McDonald's commandeers 11/11/11 as 'Fryday'

       (Crain's) — McDonald's Corp. restaurants are using Friday's
numerical palindromic date to promote its french fries.
Playing on the 11/11/11 digital version of Nov. 11, McDonald's
franchisees in metro Chicago will offer small orders of fries
for 50 cents for the day. That's half the usual price for the
       portion.
“We hope Chicagoland residents will take advantage of this
unique offer to enjoy, what are considered by many, as the ‘Best
Fries on the Planet,'” said Ron Lofton, franchisee and president
of McDonald's Owner Operators of Chicagoland and Northwest
       Indiana, in a statement.
Sales of fries have been declining since 2006, according to Port
Washington, N.Y.-based market researcher NPD Group Inc., as
nutritionists have pushed for less-caloric options. To assuage
them, the Oak Brook-based chain recently downsized the portion
size of its fries for kids' meals and added a few apple slices.
Meanwhile, Dublin, Ohio-based rival Wendy's Co. overhauled its
fries last year to a “natural cut” variety with the skin on and
       dressed with sea salt.
“They've moved away more recently from promoting their fries as
they focus on healthier options, but there's no doubt that
french fries are a pretty profitable side item,” says David
Henkes, vice president of Chicago-based food industry consultant
Technomic Inc. “I think fries will always be core to what the
       offering is for McDonald's.”
To promote the sale, McDonald's billboards feature six fries
lined up in the numerical form of the date with the offer. Also
on Friday — which is Veterans Day — the chain will host a
competition to create a dish to go with fries. The contest pits
Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould and wide receiver Earl Bennett
vs. Bull and Bear Bar executive chef David Blonsky and personal
chef to the stars Cordell McGary from Passion's Cuisine Inc. in
       Chicago.
Then on Saturday, the company plans to light two spotlights to
create a No. 11 beacon at the chain's Chicago flagship location
at Clark and Ontario streets. They will shine through the end of
       the month.
