How To Construct Chess Variant Diagrams?

Greetings all!
Besides the Musketeer chess tool I've noticed that so many of
you have various ways of procuring chess diagrams for
explanations and such. How do you make them?
Thanks,
Asher

Set up the position in WinBoard / XBoard, selecting board
textures and piece graphics that seem suitable, and then hit
'Save as Diagram' (or make a screen shot).
Ebinola seems to make screen shots of a self-made web page
containing an 'Interactive Diagram', configured to use the
Alfaerie piece graphics from chessvariants.com. As I mentioned,
we could arrange it so that such interactive diagrams can be put
directly into forum postings here. (I.e. without the need to
prepare anything at home, make a screenshot of it, upload it to
some free web space, and then link to it as an image in the
posting.)

I usually just use Microsoft Paint. Edit the picture manually
with copy/paste. It doesn't take a lot of time to edit the
picture to move pieces when your used to it, although I don't
bother with making sure the pieces are centered in the middle of
a square and whatnot. It's not ideal to have to do this, but it
works.
I'm sure there are better tools out there. A graphic editor
where the board can be on one layer and the pieces on another is
one example. And of course using a diagram tool would be even
better. I just like the simplicity with paint :-X
