Variants with Environment Modifiers.

Are there any variants that successfully utilise environment
modifiers to alter the scene on the board? When I say
'environment modifiers' - let me take a couple of examples from
Knightmare chess:
[li]A card called 'Forbidden City' allows you to place a new
piece on any unoccupied square. This piece cannot move and
cannot be captured.[/li]
[li]One card allows you to demarcate a square as holy ground. If
a piece moves onto this square, it gains the power to move as a
bishop.[/li]
[li]A card called 'Man-Trap' (IIRC) requires the holder to
secretly write down a square on the board. If a piece occupies
that square in the future, the trap springs and that piece is
captured.[/li]
There are also variants that use portals that can give slower
pieces a lot of mobility.

Three come to mind with dynamic environments:
Laser Chess/Khet has, in a sense, every piece being a piece of
terrain.
George Marino's Timeline has every piece leaving a trail
("timeline") that can later be interacted with.
Voidrider Chess (and others, but this seems the most involved)
allows squares to be moved.
And there are more with fixed environments (which it sounds like
maybe isn't what you were looking for?):
Of course, there are several games with rivers or palaces.
Joe Joyce's games (often more wargame than chess variant)
sometimes involve terrain.
Christian Freeling's Chad involves castles.
Renezans Chess has its central square give additional powers to
any occupant.

Feudal [Avalon Hill] used a very large board with three types of
terrain and one piece for a literal Castle that required pieces
to stop on the courtyard space before entering.
