That's an old knight.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but the Vikings were frequent traders
with the Middle East, right? That would explain the inspired
design.

Well, the abstract Islamic "Shatranj" design was actually used
conventionally all throughout Europe from Russia to Spain. Chess
came into Europe through Spain and Italy mainly, as well as a
few other places.
