Please submit something else though! ;D

Ok, will do. Obviously good variants aren't slapped together
quickly, so I'm glad you made the deadline February 15. With my
current "to do" list I might need almost all that time. In the
meantime, here are some of my thoughts on what makes a good
variant:
2) Piece material is well balanced to produce strategic and
tactical play. No pieces are too strong which can disrupt the
harmony of good tension in a game. Obviously this means there
are no easily captured, undefended pieces in the starting
position (one example of a flaw in game design).
3) Graphics are well-produced, imaginative, and interesting.
Armies which are based on a "theme" are cool in games too. (I've
even seen games designed to simulate a situation from a famous
book or movie).
4) Game pays homage to other works. Rather than an all-new
invention, why not do something that builds on another's work?
This means you have a new invention, but helps create interest
in something that someone has done before. After all, the
original work was also produced by someone who has the same
interest in variants.
5) Respect chess tradition. Don't invent all new rules to
obliterate the game of chess. Only slight changes are needed to
make a much different game than chess. Be very selective in
changing these elements: one king, one queen, row of pawns in
front of army, rooks at corners, win is by checkmate, etc.
Any other good features, comments, or thoughts?

I have submitted a variant, but I'll not post about it here
until the deadline has been passed.
I tried to keep as faithful to the original game as possible but
I may very well have screwed some things up here and there.

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS FEBRUARY 15th, Valentines

Too close, considering that it is not that easy to design a
variant that is not similar to existing variants. Lets see :-\

Oddly, I have a bunch of variants (untested) sitting in a
folder. What's required is looking at them and deciding which
ones are worth actually testing for submission.

Oddly, since I do this on a regular basis, so if you're like me
you have a bunch of variants (untested) sitting in a folder.

I can't wait to see your submission! ;D

Here's a sneak preview. The cats come from Chess and Half (by
Nicolino Will) and the bulldogs come from Bulldog Chess (by
vickalan). The game also has the normal chess pieces,
chancellors, and guards. :)
Still to come: piece definitions, game rules, and of course the
name of the game. :o

Couldn't help but give a cheeky preview myself.
If I have time, I'm going to texture some models in Blender and
make a board in Tabletop Simulator.

Tabletop Simulator looks like it started as a good idea that
just turned into a juvenile implementation where you just throw
pieces or upend the table at the end. Is there a way to link the
GUI to a search engine? If so, that would be the more
interesting feature, otherwise it just looks like it only makes
3D views of stuff without much in the way of releasing final
products with it. All of the demos I have seen look like they
are more interested in the "physics" of tossing stuff around
rather than real game play. Or am I missing something?

Most of the stuff that would muck up a game you can disable. I
tried making another variant in it and managed to align a grid
for the pieces to snap to. Other than that, it's convenient for
the variant and just the variant; if I had the ability to write
an application I would.
EDIT: I know a couple of people who have used it to play D&D.
So, uhh... that's a thing as well.
