IMPORTANT! The 100 Post Chess Variant Contest!
By: Asher Hurowitz Date: January 17, 2018, 1:09 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Hello!
Wow! When I started this forum a month ago I could have never
imagined that only a few weeks later I would have this much
activity on this obscure site! I'd like to thank you all
sincerely for making this possible and I hope to see the forum
grow even more!
We have reached the great milestone of 100 posts!
So I have a forum full of the best and brightest chess variant
creators and scholars, what to do but have a contest!
In honor of the number 100, I found it logical to host a Decimal
variant contest. The 10x10 board has a certain allure as a
natural expansion of the 8x8 chess board, and has remained a
popular chess variant board for centuries. HOWEVER, I want this
contest to bring NEW variants into the world, and only new
variants will be accepted. How would you deal with the 10x10
board?
To submit, Email or Message me in a private chat.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS FEBRUARY 15th, Valentines Day.
There will be two winners, one prize for originality (be it
mechanic, concept, theme etc) and one for playability. All games
will be played by a panel of playtesters.
The winners will have a separate subforum dedicated to their
variants and another potentially cash (emphasis on POTENTIALLY)
prize of some kind, but may also be another form of prize
(custom variant set created, etc).
Thanks,
Asher

Well, I might just end up entering that 'distasteful' variant I
was talking about the other day, because funnily enough, it's
10x10...
Might not be what's expected. In fact, it's something you're
likely to least expect.
However, I think it's the first variant of its kind to be
derived from internet culture, and for that merit could be
given. I could be wrong.

I hereby invent 100-square Gothic Chess, and name it Gothic 100.
:)
There, that was easy.
Setup as in 10x8 Gothic Chess, with pawns that can be pushed 2
or 3 moves on their first move, with en passant captures
applicable to both types of single-move pawn pushes when the
opponent has bypassed the advanced pawn.
There are 3 examples:
1. d5 Nh8
2. d6 e6 (pushed from square e9)
3. dxe7
1. d5 Nh8
2. d6 g9
3.d7 e7 (pushed e9-e7)
4. dxe7
1. d5 Nh8
2. d6 g9
3.d7 e6 (pushed e9-e6 right passed it!)
4. dxe7
Is this how other 100-square variants handle en passant?

What's the preferred format to submit a game? Do we post the
game here, and inform you by PM that we're submitting it?
Or submit the entire game to you (Asher) by PM?
As a quick preview, I plan to submit a "re-furbished" variant.
The original game was invented by someone in another country.
I've played it, and seen others play it, and it's an extremelly
well-designed game on a 10x10 board. The game and rules are
excellent, but I plan to make stylistic fixes to the description
(the author is not a native English speaker), make graphical
improvements, and revise some piece names. Of course I plan to
do this with the original author's knowledge, and properly
credit him (if any prize, will share with him of course too).
Please confirm if such a submission is OK. It is new in the
sense that as far as I know it's not currently catalogued in any
document of "western" variants, and it's also new in the sense
that graphics will be freshly "overhauled". But it's origin I
think is several years old.

Submit the entire game via PM, it's fine, but just for the
future original games are preferred.

Ok Thanks. The game I have in mind is not original, or more
specifically, it was not made originally for this contest. So to
keep with the spirit of the format, I won't post it. But I may
post it later in "Variant Reviews". :)

If I got your meaning when we were talking I don't think I would
like you to submit that.
