Playing Variants (with board updates like one image per day)
By: chilipepper Date: January 8, 2018, 10:07 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone know this forum's policy on playing variants by
posting images of board updates? This would include for example
one image per move (such as below). I know this is a lot of
images, but it's not uncommon to play this way with slow
time-control (like one move per day). If I can find players, I
might like to play such a game. :)

I'll play something! The images are fine! (You can either do it
in Personal Messages on on a public thread)

Awesome! How about "chess on an infinite plane" such as the
image above? The board is unbounded in all directions. It has
three non-standard pieces (the guard, hawk, and chancellor) -
none which are too hard to learn. If you'd like to play I'll be
       happy to post board updates.
I'll also post the rules (formally) probably on a new thread.
Time control can be 3 days max per move (or another control that
       you prefer).
(I usually cannot play more than one move per day.)
If this is ok let me know, and I'll start a thread for our game
       in a day or two.
fyi: I would also like to discuss "theory" of this game,
probably on another thread. That would include topics such as
minimum material to mate, average length of a typical game (as
compared to normal chess), etc. But this I'll do later after at
least one game is in-progress. :)

I am willing to start a game if you post a thread about the
rules! I will open up a new board for variant theory!

Thanks for a special board about variant theory. That could get
attention from chess theorists and mathematicians (of which
there are plenty). But I think a lot of math enthusiasts are shy
people! We have to see if they will visit.:P I'd like to see
       what they say! :)

Since this game might be one of the first played on this forum,
I thought it might be a good idea to do some "touch-up" of the
       graphics.
Sometimes players move pieces outside of the normal displayed
area (20 files x 22 ranks), and so I "stitch" more board to the
left, right, top, or bottom. The graphical changes will make
this process easier (but will not have any other visible
consequences). Allow me about 2-3 days and then I'll post all
the rules and we'll be able to play! A preview of the starting
       position is included here:
Update: I've become really busy with other work, so probably
cannot begin a game until later in January. I'll check back here
to make sure Asher (or someone else) would still be interested
in playing. (I still have time to visit forums, but not a good
time to commit to a game). :-[

Asher, I finished some recent work and believe I now have time
for a game. Are you still interested in playing? We can either
continue on this thread, or I'll start a new one. I would play
about one move per day if that's OK with you. (max 3 days).
       The rules are here:
  HTML https://chessvariantforum.createaforum.com/variant-reviews/variant-description-chess-on-an-infinite-plane/
I'll also post one or two messages about some opening theory
(what little is known) just to show an interesting study before
       our game starts. :)
