       Neutral King Chess
   DIR By: ubersketch

       This is another simple variant.
It's all the same as FIDE Chess except the original kings are
       replaced by non-royal counterparts.
Instead, a neutral king will be placed in the center.
The goal of this game is to make a turn that checkmates the
       neutral king.
Each turn you may also move the neutral king but not into check.

It shouldn't be possible to move the King repeatedly... this can
       result in excessive draws.
       I do like the idea.

They are dealing with the same problem I mentioned above with
some interesting rules. Two things I would note:
       • This game would benefit from having an odd numbers board: 7x7,
with the "grey" King in the center.
[Insert wish for posting boards here]
       • I don't like the solutions they come up with for the King's
movement, but can't immediately think of a better one. I do like
       the idea, however.

This is 7x9 instead of 7x7, but does this suit your tastes

The way I would solve the issue with king move repeats is that
after a king move the other player is not allowed to move the
king back to the square the king came from.

It would take some play testing, but I think you could still end
       up with square movement.
And yes, I think that 9x7 board looks perfect.

This post became way more interesting than I expected.
Lets put a new twist on this variant.
Instead of the king being moved by the players, a number between
1-9 is generated. The number dictates how it will move.
       1 - forwards
       2 - forwards-right
       3 - right
       4 - backwards-right
       5 - backwards
       6 - backwards-left
       7 - left
       8 - forwards-left
       9 - no movement
This should make the game much more interesting. If the King
gets a number which checks it, then a new number is generated.
