Allowing Debate on your forum?

What are your thoughts on allowing debate on your forum?
We allow it on Christianity Haven, but sometimes it can get a
bit rough. I don't know if members actually read everything
everyone else wrote?

We do allow debates here as long as they don't get out of hand

My two forums don't have political or religious discussions
banned, but they're not likely to come up because the forums are
focused on web development and music performance, respectively.

I allow it.
The more restrictions you have on a forum these days, the less
people will use it.
It may have worked 20 years ago but it bothers people enough
these days to skip your forum because of it.
Just watch it and make sure it doesn't turn ugly. :)

I think about every forum I ever owned, I've always allowed
debates

I've even been on forums similar to this, all out anything goes,
where there are little to no debates going on
