I don't think it's fell behind that much. I mentioned how it's
got all the tools to compete with premium stuff.

There are plenty of forums around for all these platforms. Just
go on site showcase sections of the forum software homepages.
Of course, some forums have vanished, but a lot still there.

It was a long time ago.
It was a CMS-like system that had phpBB integrated into it.
It was really quite cool. I kind of miss those days!

your forum and it’s like phpbb no longer exists or something.
Mybb, xenforo and smf and even proboards seem to be dominating
the market now.

Sorry for quoting my own post, but as of November 2025, unless
I'm not looking carefully enough, ever since I got back into
forums, post exchanges etc, Planet Discussion is probably the
only phpBB based forum I'm active on. With the exception of
maybe this place, which uses SMF, 90% of the forums I've joined
thus far are using paid/premium software

Free software lacks certain mods people need. For instance, I'm
able to get most mods for my phpBB forum, but Recent Topics is
difficult to install and the theme changer doesn't work with my
premium theme without code modification.

I've always felt that free forums have more mods than paid. Of
course, many of them are for specific versions and don't get
updated that much.
Maybe mod makers should be more like WordPress mod makers. Offer
a basic free version with a paid option for better features.

phpBB is old but it refuses to die. I see it has a very strong
software. It’s not the most fancy, but it’s stable and doesn’t
really malfunction if you do the setup correctly. I like that
it’s free and you can customize plenty of things if you have
patience.

It's old and updated.
But there is (or at least was) a wide range of themes and
plugins available to make it just how you want it to be.
Back when I used phpBB2 back when that version was new, it
didn't take long to get a lot of themes and plugins made for it.
