I don't see a lot of forums using phpBB anymore. It's always
been my favorite free forum software.
I miss seeing all the old forums using phpBB.

I don't know why not. All the themes, free and paid, are very
mobile ready.
And it has plenty of extensions, except for three irritating
things: a one-click system updater being one. The others being a
avatar resizer/uploader and a mentions extension that half-works

I don't think it's very popular anymore.

Based on the support forum, it seems to be the most popular of
the free forum platforms.
I think it's way more popular than MyBB and SMF.

Yeah but look around on any forum that allows you to advertise
your forum and it’s like phpbb no longer exists or something.
Mybb, xenforo and smf and even proboards seem to be dominating
the market now.

There's definitely more upgrades from the phpBB developers than
the MyBB ones. i remember getting excited about the supposedly
MyBB big upgrades but I still haven't seen anything :(

You are very right.
For as much people as it seems to have, I RARELY see phpBB
powered forums anymore.
Remember Php-Nuke? It had phpBB2 integrated into it. I miss that
CMS. I always thought it was so cool. I think I found WordPress
after using it and replaced it with WP.

Honestly, I think a smart developer CAN adapt phpBB, SMF, MyBB
(if they are very smart) etc. to be AS GOOD as premium software.
I mean, for phpBB, all the basic extensions are there, but they
have to be manually put on and the developer has to be aware
they exist.
And myself, I struggled to find all the extensions for phpBB,
but I found out where most of them are, I think. Some are in
development, though, but workable.

I do miss the days where phpBB was the most popular free
software. Titansgo.net, a Teen Titans fan forum that I used to
visit was powered by phpBB2. MyBB became the most popular free
software for a while, about a decade ago but it's really falling
behind.

I think that one was before my time on forums as I don't
remember that one at all
