How often do you email your users?
Why do you usually email them?

I don't email them. I probably wouldn't email them even if I had
a big successful forum, but maybe the forum system emails people
whether I like it or not.
Well, I'd rather only email people on a collected email list
because it's not spammy.

A collected email list (newsletter) is really the best way to do
it.
If you don't verify things on a forum, most people won't get
your email anyways, especially if they use a GMail account.
