Welfare and the state of maine
By: Chappie Date: December 14, 2011, 9:58 am
---------------------------------------------------------
What do you guys think about welfare ie. Food stamps, medicaid,
etc.
my opinion:
I believe that welfare (mostly food stamps) is one of the most
over used/ abused things in this country. Maine being one of the
leading states on welfare. This means that everyone on this
team/ everyone that works is paying for these people to live.
Heres an example I like to use that I believe proves of the
abuse:
I was cashiering one day at my JOB when a woman came up with a
little girl with some food and paper towels. She was talking to
her little girl (daughter) about how they were out of paper
towels and that they needed some. She proceeded to put her items
on the belt at my register. I went through the normal procedure
asking her how she was and what not. Then she started telling me
about how they took $15.00 off of her food stamps permanently.
Then she told me that the state had been doing that to a lot of
people lately. I didn't think much of it just assuming that she
didn't have much anyway. So I rang all of her things through and
gave her the total. She started talking about how expensive it
was. (she got all name brand things ie. pepsi, mountain dew,
country kitchen bread, and bounty paper towels.) Then I told her
the sub total which had to be payed in cash. Then she said
everything she got was food stampable and I reminded her that
she got the paper towels. It was at this point when she said
that she couldn't believe that wasn't covered by food stamps and
she didn't want them. it was $2.95 or something. so I took them
off the order. At the end of the order when a person pays with
EBT food stamps, the amount left comes up on the screen, this
woman had $455 and some change on her food stamps card after
buying this stuff, and she was complaining that they took 15
off. What is wrong in these peoples heads that makes them think
its ok to not work and live off this money? She came in
countless amount of times to just buy mountain dew with her EBT
card.
There are so many people that come in and do the same exact
thing. Now I say this but I do not thing that the system is a
bad thing when used with responsibility. For instance jinx and I
are on food stamps, because we rarely have enough money to buy
groceries after paying for our bills and what not (essentials
like; heat, electric, rent, Car, and phones.) But when we
applied we were only able to get $27.00 a month! What I am
trying to get at is people that are on food stamps should A.)
not be able to get a job due to physical and/ or mental
capabilities that limit their ability to do specific jobs B.)
Are elderly, retired, and not receiving retirement. C.)Veterans
that have gotten drastically injured while in the line of duty
and cannot work to support their family/ themselves. These are
valid reasons as to why I believe people should be able to be on
welfare. Now as stated earlier there are poeple that are on
forms of welfare that do not abuse the system, these are
respectable people that most likely need the extra help. But its
the people that abuse their welfare privilege that should be cut
from the system completely.
Basically to sum up my thoughts are this, if your on welfare and
you are physically and mentally stable to get a job you should
only be on this welfare help until/ up to the time you find a
job and are financially stable ie. in a stable job for up to 3
months. Lastly if you are caught abusing your welfare privilege
you should be able to be fined, or get your welfare privilege
taken away.
This is my opinion I welcome yours.....

just be careful with a thread like this. This is a VERY HOT
TOPIC! do not debate on here or argue. please have a logical
discussion and be educated in what you say.
I am just going to say we need welfare reform. How you say? i
don't know that is for someone else to find out. welfare is
abused.

How do we have a logical and even discussion without having a
debate? Seeing as a debate is a discussion where you logically
present two sides of an issue.
My oppinion on the matter is that people should not be living
off welfare unless they have no capability to work. Instead the
money should be used to help people with getting back on their
feet so that they can take care of themselves?

Exactly my thoughts, sadly this state doesn't have a very great
way to test whether or not to allow a person(s) to be on one of
the welfare privileges or not. They always bring it down to how
much you make, compared to how much you have to pay on living
expenses. ie. rent, heat, and electricity. they do not count a
car payment as a necessity to living, nor phone payments. If
they were to put these things into this category as a necessary
living expense we would have been applicable for more money, so
would many, many others.

Another big thing that would be helpful is piss tests. I get
tired of hardworking people having to get tested for drugs to
earn money, but yet you can get free money without being tested.

drug testing wouldn't solve this problem. Your only going to up
the costs because they have to be produced and tested. that
costs money.

I'd rather spend money on drug tests then have a bunch of people
taking my tax money and buying drugs. There really isn't much of
a difference.

so your saying you would rather drug test everyone on welfare so
that they can recieve it? your going to cost yourself more money
and it still won't solve the problem. people can cheat drug
tests and if they know they need it they will just stop using
for the time then go back on using.
just remember not everyone who is on welfare uses drugs so a lot
of those tests are going to be useless.

It's random drug testing and some current estimates are that
about 50% of people in maine on welfare would be dropped for
drug abuse.
