       Magician by Raymond E. Feist
       This is one of my favourite fantasy books ever! I can't
       recommend it enough!
       It gave birth to the Rift War Saga but Feist totally pulled a
       blinder out of the bag with Magician alone.

       Thirded!!  And the Empire series, from beyond the Rift, was also
       good - but was a collaboration with a different author, um
       (google to the rescue) Janny Wurtz.
