       Biography
Twenty-nine years ago in the Crown city of Kimlasca-lanvaldear,
an infant was delivered to the city orphanage. His parents were
completely unknown, as he was discovered in a basket on the
orphanage steps. (It was rumoured at that time that Lady Natalia
Fabre had had a child out of wedlock, but then, so did a lot of
women of much lowlier birth.) Either way, the child (who may or
may not have been of noble blood) was taken in and named
Ratisbon Schwann (due to the blanket in the crib, which bore the
emblem of a swan, and the fact he was found on St. Ratisbon's
       Eve.
As he grew up, Schwann proved a studious boy, and started
training for the priesthood. Although proving intelligent and a
good orator, Schwann's somewhat easygoing view of the faith and
his conviction that "even the worst can be redeemed" led him to
be accused of heresy by a crusty old fire-and-brimstone
preacher, Malkuth Karamazoff. As such, Schwann ended up in front
of an ecclesiastical court in Cantabria, seat of the Crown
       orthodox church.
Needless to say, Schwann, who conducted his own defence, ended
up wiping the floor with Karamazoff's arguments, while producing
compelling evidence that Karamazoff had been dabbling in black
magic in his spare time. Impressed, the council of elders of
Cantabria invited Schwann to live in the city, where he
proceeded to drive the council mad with constant clever
arguments against taking the holy book too literally and his
       stand against prejudices.
The one exception to the council's general annoyed bemusement
towards Schwann was Arch-lector Kingston, the youngest and most
progressive of the arch-lectors. Becoming great friends, the
pair would often stay up half the night discussing theological
issues. However, not even this powerful patron could prevent
Schwann from eventually being sent to the far end of Kernow, to
the town of Chaosgate. A perfect answer, the other arch-lectors
said. Let him go there, to try and bring faith to the faithless.
And if a Chaos beast should eat him...oh dear, how sad, never
       mind!
