A nervous courier.
By: guest11 Date: September 6, 2015, 9:47 am

*A short stocky man rides to the gates on a decrepit old mule,
he appears very nervous and jumpy.. his attire shows him to be a
simple farmer not accustomed to leaving his land*
*Stopping the mule at the gates he raises his voice and shouts
with a quaver*
'ullo in there! I come wit a par..par...erm a message! It's for
the..*his eyes go very large and he gasps the final word* Duke!

A hatch on the thick oak gates opens and a pair of suspicious
eyes peer out.
In the Duke's name. Who goes there?
Corporal Gavin Penrose was coming to the end of his shift and
the last thing he wanted to deal with was some foul smelling
peasant trying to claw his way into the Duke's favour. The guard
rolled his eyes and sneered.
What do you want you vapid little turd?

*The farmer falls off his mule with a yelp before stammering his
response*
I was p-p-p-paid to b-b-bring this to the Duke! Please s-s-sire
don't hurt me! I'm just a messenger!
*He sits on his knees in front of the gate holding a rolled
scroll up high, it is sealed with a wax seal with a shadow elf
sigil of the house Runefyre embossed in it*
I was t-t-told to deliver this, wait for a response, and
return... and he would TRIPLE my pay! *He rummages in a pocket
and pulls out a small coin purse, bulging at the seams.. quite
likely several years income for the poor farmer*

Tired and unpleasant he might be, stupid he was not. Opening the
door the corporal eyed the scroll suspiciously and scratched his
head. No way would this cretin trembling before him have the
resources to buy the parchment and wax. Nor did he look like the
kind of person with some nefarious plan in hand. Penrose's eyes
narrowed and he snatched the scroll from the man.
You, come with me; and by the crown, so help me, if this is some
sort of trick I will tear you a new one.
The corporal nodded departure to his fellow guards, turned on
his heel and headed in the direction of the hall.

*with a yelp the farmer jumps to his feet and rushes after the
guard, head bowed low as if he was trying to scrape and bow as
he walked. Terror dripping from every pore of his body*

The Duke looked up as a grizzled guard, was it Penfold...
Pendower... he couldn't quite remember, entered the hall with a
distressed, grubby little man whom he had never seen before.
What is it Corporal? I have pressing matters to attend to. You
may not be aware but I lost my cousin, the Prince this very day
so please do not concern me with trivialities this day

Corporal Penrose shifted uncomfortably as the Duke addressed
him, wondering if maybe he shouldn't have thrown the little
scumbag out on his ear.
My liege, apologies for intruding, this fellow turned up at the
gate with a message for you.
Taking a step forward, Penrose gulped nervously and handed the
sealed parchment over to his lord.
