Making your own LARP weapons

I have been looking into this over the last day or two so I
thought it would be a good idea to start this thread so we can
all contribute to a kind of 'in forum source book of ideas'.
I will kick things off with this video I found on YouTube:

I would be interested to see this 'source book' develop so if
you have any ideas please post them here ;)

So if we were to make our own weapons they would need to be to

I think so for safety reasons...a good, safe weapon and stout
boots are a must I feel the rest can be added to in time :)

It will be essential that the safety standard of the weapons is
high. Anyone that had the pleasure of fighting against me at
GeekFest will know that I don't hold back when it comes to
swinging a sword or staff :P
It Safety is Paramount!! Events such as LARP weekends have to be
covered by PLI (Public Liability Insurance) and in the event of
any injuries insurance costs can increase and therefore the cost
of the whole thing will increase for everyone involved.
If too many accidents happened then the events would become
virtually 'un-insurable' and nobody wants that.
I would say that the standards in these video's are the bare
minimum that should be achieved.
I would suggest that if you are not confident that you can
achieve that, just go online and purchase a well made product.
They look a little pricey when you first look but if you look
into buying the materials needed to do the job properly you will
see that they are pretty good value for money, especially if you
consider the time it takes to make them you are looking at a few
days to a week when it comes to adding layers of paint, drying
times, latex coats etc.
You would have ended up spending more than if you had just gone
and paid for one.

Just for peace of mind, as part of 'checking in' at an event ,
we like to safety check all weapons that the players may bring
to ensure minimum risk.
(We will also check armour and outfits as these may allow extra
hit points to players!)

If where going to use shields do they need to be padded or can
they just be wood
