Dead Men Walking - CH1 - The Road to the Border
By: guest15 Date: June 23, 2016, 6:57 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Shrill-Pine Forest.
28 miles from Civilization. The closest town is Truron.
It reaches nearly quarter past one in the morning, with a heavy
downpour. Visibility is reasonable, on account of the moon's
light.
It's been a day since Astandord had left Chaosgate, making speed
as much was possible to try and get to the Keep. Though the
landscape of Kernow had remained unhostile to him thus far, the
dark undergrowth of danger was ever present. For the most part,
the journey was quiet, scattered only with the noise of hoof
meeting dirt and the clunk of armour with the horses movements.
Reaching down, Astandord took a canteen from his saddle bags,
taking the cork out to swig upon some water. He wet his lips,
before taking a few glugs of the liquid.
Something was stirring in the woods that flanked the road ahead.
While he didn't notice it, there was something watching and
following. As his pre-occupied state led him to be unawares of
his surroundings, the tendrils of malice were all ensaring,
edging ever closer to the dirt path that the Mercenary was
upon... until finally, they struck.
Fear gripped the hearts of the steed as it rounded a bend in the
path, spooking it to it's very core. With a hard clamp down of
hooves, the horse stopped abruptly - leaving Astandord to fall
off to the side, hitting the ground with a heavy thud as he
crashed down in his plate armour. Getting back up as quick as he
could, Astandord stood unbalanced, his ankle and left wrist
damaged in the fall. In the time it took for him to stand, the
horse had rearered, turned and fled as quick as it could gallop.
"Gah! Come back here you dozy ****!" He shouts out after the
horse. In a fit of anger, he lets out a scream in frustration.
Turning, he looks around quickly and draws his blade, his gaze
fixed ahead after noticing what lay in front. In the middle of
the track stands a handcart, piled high with bodies, which also
scatter around on the floor, with what seems to be a nearby
caravan forming up the length of the track, with several of the
wagons charred. From his distance of some one hundred meters
away, it was hard to tell who or what the corpses were, or what
had happened to them. What was most worrying was the foul black
mist that had taken hold against the floor, concentrated only in
that area of death.
With panted breath, he addresses and speaks to himself. "We're a
horse down. Half way... to the Keep. And that... whatever that
is..." He exhales hard to steady his breathing, calm his nerves.
"Bloody marvellous."

"Oh Madre! Cómo se llorar si me podía ver ahora!"
A drunken slur emitted from near the cart. Dressed in black and
with a cowl to cover his face, he lay against the bodies,
covered in blood and drunk.

Bearing a resting grump face, he quirks an eyebrow as he hears a
voice from the pile of the dead. With a slight squint of his
eye, he tries to see from where exactly, but is unable.
Apprehensively, he starts to walk forward, keeping his longsword
pointed ahead of him, treading carefully.
He takes glances around himself, trying to keep his situational
awareness in better shape that just previously.

"Puedo oírte! Debe ejecutar!"
Again, another drunken outburst. The drunk man, notably a
Spaniard, turns to try and stand, but falls onto his side,
looking down the ride at Astandord.
"Ha! You're too late! We're all dead already!" Shouted in a
happy and thick spanish accent.

Making it over to stand in front of the inchorent and
innebriated man, he looks down in a confused manner. The sword
is held with the tip protruding toward the head of this
survivor, just in case. Another glance around, just in case,
before looking back to the Spaniard.
"What happened here? Who are you?"

He looks up with a grin, before he is then unable to hold his
head up any further, and collapses it into the mud. With a few
coughs, he eventually rolls over onto his back, staring up with
glazed eyes.
"There was fighting... Fighted. Fighting. Fight."

Astandord looks positively unimpressed. Here he was, standing in
the middle of nowhere and surrounded by bodies - and all he had
for help in this predicament was a drunk Spaniard.
"Ja. I can see there was something that happened involving
fighting. People don't tend to just die in droves like this. I'm
asking you what happened. Who was fighting and what for?" He
tries to ask politely, behind gritted teeth.

He laughs hysterically at apparently nothing, before proudly
declaring "Wash the pale men! yesh!" He scrunches his face
before burping, then continuing. "They come and fighted! I
fighted back. Was fighting."

Astandord rolls his eye, before turning to inspect the pile of
corpses. He talks back to the drunken fool as he does so.
"Who the fuck are the Pale Men?"

"It's one of 'em isn't it? Yesh." He says slurredly. Flusttering
his arms around. "yes. I fighteds one of them."
