History
Of the various tribes of the Plantae the Dren are known to be
the most fierce and warriorlike, protected with thorn and sting,
the last to fight against the Pryv. Less well known, even among
the Plantae, were the first to face the Pryv's attentions. The
Florr were not the strongest, fiercest, fastest, or sturdiest
tribe but they were known for bringing joy with them wherever
they went. It was said that the Florr exuded happiness such that
you could smell their village from a mile away and draw peace
into your lungs as you did so. It is for this reason that the
Dren often sent their warriors most in need of rest there for a
season or two when even they had wearied of fighting, and for
this reason that they would return more determined than ever to
protect the forest and its people.
When the Pryv came to the forest, they were drawn to the
happiness and the peace of the Florr village such that by
morning it had been destroyed, despite the best efforts of those
few fighters among them. There were few survivors, those who
escaped the chaos, but they took the seedpods with them. Iona
never spoke of the attack, only that a Dren warrior had saved
her, and died in the task. Eglantine was the youngest of the
children Iona raised, each of them named for the parents they
would never know, but she was named for the Dren who had saved
them instead (his name being Briar) and took Ion as a surname
for the woman who raised them. There were a few theories among
the children, that Iona did not know whose child she was, that
she was Iona's child, that she was actually a Dren child whose
mother had been visiting the village (perhaps the one who saved
them) and not a Florr at all (something that was soon discounted
when she grew to adulthood and the distinctive scent of the
Florr was revealed). The truth may never be known, as Iona was
lost to the Pryv when Eglantine was 15.
Despite the hardship of her early life, Eglantine has known a
great deal of kindness as well, those who have raised her and
helped her, and who have taught her a great deal. She prays to
the goddess every day to protect her people and guide them
through this Winter. She has faith that despite their losses
there will be a Spring for her people and that they will grow
anew. Sometimes seeds must travel far to find good soil to take
root. The Pryv fascinate and terrify her, she wants to know more
about them and how to find a peace but their very presence sends
shivers through her (with good reason). There is a part for
everything in nature, bees and butterflies tend the flowers
after all, but the Pryv spread like wildfire through the forest,
and like wildfire they will burn themselves out and the forest
will grow again.
