Steel Works

Here in Port Talbot, thousands of men from the Steel Works have
been laid off and lost their jobs. The blast furnaces were shut
down and a once where 13000 men were working there is now
1000. The Government were asked to intervene and nationalise
the Steel Works .but did nothing to help our town which was once
a bustling busy area is now a ghost town. Yet in Scunthorpe they
are getting help from the Government. To say our town is
'fuming' with this latest government 'move' is an
understatement.

Understandable Hazel. But from my perspective, the government
is actually the cause of the problems, and is just dithering. I
doubt that it will save the Scunthorpe blast furnaces.

Don't know what the goverment will do but I will be surprised if
they do save it.

I think that the previous government were just very naive to
ever allow 'British' Steel to become under the control of any
foreign government whether Indian or Chinese. It must have been
obvious that it was always to the advantage of a foreign
government to reduce competition to their own steel industry.
There is a lot to be said for nationalisation when not doing so
threatens the survival of an essential industry.
As it is, this government appears determined to make agriculture
in this country, particularly smaller farms, unsustainable. By
the time they have made sure that families cannot pass on to
their children the capital assets that farms rely on and then
ensured that builders have nothing to prevent them building on
agricultural fields in preference to industrial sites we will be
in a position where it will never be possible to feed this
population with home grown food.
