Craftsman 32cc Mini Tiller fix
By: Cut4fun Date: June 22, 2012, 6:47 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Earlier this year I was set on buying me a new Stihl mini tiller
to Replace my Honda mini tiller. Well the way it worked out
some guy was moving out of state and sold me a like new
craftsman mini tiller for cheap cheap cheap 8). Works great and
wife loves it.
The other day cruising CL I seen another one down the road from
me for $20 and stated locked up. I'm thinking cool parts for the
one I just bought.
Well today I was looking at my JD trimmer that is a Homelite
30cc powerhead and I thought to my Redneck self, I can do this.
;)
Here is some pics of the parts mini tiller with laminated
crankshaft throws. The rod pin had oblong the crank and finally
broke the lamination apart. The muffler had some kind of metal
wire coming out of the exhaust outlets and was plugged up
(forgot to get pic of that). ???

The First torn up engine is a Ryobi and so is the Craftsman
engine on the original good tiller
What do you think of that stamped steel fabricated connecting
rod?

You remind me of myself sometimes!
My neighbor is still running the Stihullochobi string trimmer I
"repaired" for him years ago.
Took some "engineering" but it worked great.

The Homelite 25 and 30 were far superior to the Ryobi 31/32
engine.

I'd be willing to bet that your wife takes to the one with the
Homelite engine and the other one just sets?

:o and that laminated crank ::) Cant believe it when I seen
it.
Testing the Homie one out she says it tills just like the other
one. Thats all I care about right now.

I have some of those Ryobi engines and they run OK but they
don't look so good to take them apart.
I have a Ryobi from 1985 that was originally a Lawnboy. I used
it as a weed whacker for 15 years and it tired me out many
times. It stihl runs like new as a model airplane engine. If you
do anything to one to make it run faster, the rod big end will
give trouble. You have to keep them below 7000. Some even had
limiting coils at 7000. The one I sometimes currently use as a
weed whacker has a limiting coil in it. The limited coil is OK
for weed whacker use.
Even the Homelites have changed. The original Homelite 25's had
a forged crank with the counterweight and main shaft as one
piece. But since the early 90's they have been a piece of drill
rod for the main shaft and cold rolled sheet for the
counterweight. The crankpin always was drill rod.
A interesting observation on my part is that all the curved
shaft type weed whackers use the .080" trimmer line and the
homeowner straight shaft ones use .095" line. The reason is that
the straight shaft ones have a gear reduction in the trimmer
head. The 095" line lasts a lot longer.
My cheaper Ryobi and Homelite Bandit weed whackers have no
clutch and are direct drive to the string head. I get along just
find with them this way.
My Stihl 45 curved shaft trimmer has a clutch. I like my Echo
yard tools the best. The Stihl 27cc engine has good power but
the ergonomic feel is not as good as the Echo.
The newer Ryobi branded engines are the Homelite design

Everytime I see the internals of some of these engines, I can't
get over what I see. But, I guess they are building them to a
price point..
