Echo 490
By: Chainsawrepair Date: March 22, 2022, 7:04 am

Always fun wheeling, dealing and trading saws, parts, bars,
chains etc etc. All party’s happy.
😎✌️🍺
2021 490 that been ported. Was told maybe 20 tanks so far.
490 has spring assist start.
Ran a couple locals echo 4910 and sort of was wanting one to try
out. Also was looking at echo 501.
Echo 490 has different piston and cylinder. P more like slab
side 372. Quad port.
4910 501 p more like 440 piston style.
Reading 490 is a turd stock. But this one with just blind port
work a local does seems to run pretty good.
But by Joe's dyno runs so does the 4910 501 stock leave lot on
table to be fixed by porting.

Saving some of Joe Harkness info
The intake shape is the same, square with a triangle on the
bottom
Square part is 71* very point is 82*
Ex, 114*
Tr, 125*
Squish .052 with .020 base gasket.
490 is the cheaper version of the 500. But still come factory
with a rim setup
Going to clean up the transfer ports, where the filler block
blends in 124/5. Raise the ex to 106-7 (about max before it
breaks through the port roof)
Square up the intake a bit, still deciding if I want to fill the
floor or not.?
Set squish to .018 7* band.
Don't think this piston lends itself to a popup. Tapered band
with a slight dome. Plus the offset combustion chamber the popup
would have to be very small diameter.

Joe = Set at 12,900.
Full size 3/87 x16 stihl rs chain. My test log is getting bigger
each cookie.
Limited coil for sure. Don't know how why who. 13,300 is all she
Will go. If I turn the H screw In more it bogs out/falls on its
face etc. Like 6-8k rpm.

I pulled the cylinder etc off this one to clean it up some.
Still some fine vertical scratching but no transfer was present.
I do not like their intake plastic slip fit clamp deal at all. I
tried to use a 49cc-54cc poulan metal intake clamp but the echo
intake was way to small for it.
Base needs to be cut to do right IMHO but going to dirko the
base and test today, Dirko should take up the uneven area. Then
will test for leak.

2 of us had same idea to try for the echo 4910 490 500 501 air
filter problems. Here is a simple fix and no fins.
I couldnt find one that fit out of my to boxes of them. But
Corey (he is from my CRG FB and one of the admins) had one that
fit perfect. Been testing them with picco 3/8LP 7T , full 3/8
7T , 325 7T and 325 8T and he said no fines got by now.
Here is my 490 with 18" 3/8LP and 3/8 full 16" and a 12" picco
too.

Got the air filter fix in. Hopefully no more fines getting by
like Corey seen with his 4910 fix.
You finding fines in your carb throat from getting by air filter
on this series echo? Just curious. Most folks find them on 490
4910 501. I did too.
Easy fix in pic. Stops it.
