2-Stroke Mix oils-What do you think is best?
By: trappermike Date: January 16, 2019, 6:01 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Synthetic oil, mineral oil, even old castor oil, what do you think
is the best mix oil to use today?
Modern lubricants have evolved a lot from the old days when saws
ran on 16-1 mix using #40 motor oil.
Now we have excellent mix oils using 40-1 to 100-1 mix ratios.
From experience what are your recommendations, favorite oils and
mix ratios? Do you favor synthetic(more expensive) or mineral
oils, what mix ratios do you find best?
Time to collect what all users think, see what is popular and
what works.
Everyone has a different opinion on this topic, interesting to
shoot out.

Between what's sold in Canada and the US it's apples and
oranges.
Stihl Canada has Castrol blend their mixes, in the US a company
in Louisiana blends theirs.
Husqvarna had XP mix sold in Canada imported from Sweden ,
Husqvarna USA blended in the SE states.
This Castrol Super 2 Stroke is still sold at Canadian Tire. What
I used from 1974 to about 1980 when Stihl had it rebadged as the
orange cap Premium.
I prefer to use Stihl Ultra full synthetic at 40:1 Husqvarna XP
mix is my 2nd choice.

Odd,my favorite mix oil in the 70's and 80's was Castrol Super
2-stroke also.
For racing or breaking in a new modded worksaw I would add one
tablespoon to the tank of fuel Castor oil from a bottle
purchased at a drug store, smells very good burning, like French
Fries, hmm I'm hungry. Some of the new synthetics I prefer now.

For racing the Klotz KL-200 mixed with the nitro and alky. Also
worked great in my work saws.
Only thing is it dont offer any rust protection for storage.
Never any problems in my saws though.
But I found it to be one of the best 100% synthetic oils out
there.
Also use original formula echo red armor semi blend. Cant vouch
for the cheapen up new version. Can tell difference by sticker
on bottles. Soild black sticker OLD, silver diamonds sticker the
newer cheapen version.
Poulan synthetic is IMO better then stihl ultra. Many stihl guys
have switched here. It is made to husqvarna specs and also
bottled under dolmar and makita labels. ;)
VP racing synthetic is one I am trying now. Good stuff so far
too.
I will only sell what I use so it works out for me.

Not odd at all there was lots of trade with product in the
professional logging market in western Canada back in the day.
We were all united with the IWA union based in Vancouver, B.C
with locals all throughout B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan,
Manitoba and north western Ontario.
Husqvarna distributor Peter Holmquist owner of Pacific Equipment
in Vancouver since 1972 was born in Sweden and raised on a
Saskatchewan farm nearby my Dad's farm. He left for B.C. to go
logging in 1953 at age 15.
Here's a picture of Peter at age 63 in February 1989 running a
first year 3120XP at our Prince Albert, Saskatchewan Winter
Festival.
Good video here of him from 1982.

I've always been a little skeptical of 100-1 mix oils,I know
some people don't like the smoke but it's kinda like seeing how
little oil your motor can run on. One day I was able to tear
down a saw that had run on 100-1 Optimol since new. Everything
was really clean inside, virtually no carbon, piston looked
good, but surprisingly the rings were completely worn out. I
replaced the rings, and the guy also wanted the muffler modified
too,so I fired up the torch to cut the muffler guts out. Well
the carbon in the muffler had some unusual compound in it,it
billowed really toxic smoke,it was choking me and a tough job to
finish.
Is there a really bad mix oil made, yes Chevron mix oil has
caused damage to several machines I had to fix, pistons blackened
and rings stuck solid, and the entire exhaust system of a large
outboard engine plugged solid with carbon. I think in some very
small towns people have to buy what they can get at a gas
station.
For High performance I like the Klotz and Bledzall oils.

Yep lots of dealers in the '80s, '90s had those little Optimol
plastic mix pouches sitting on their shelves. Sometimes for
years after some of the solvents leached out.
With most endusers the main issue wasn't always so much the
quality or type of mix oil, it was how well they maintained the
sawchain, kept the cylinder fins clean and tuned the carb.
1986 a German Stihl factory engineer told me the best mix for a
saw was Shell series 3 diesel engine oil. Shake can each day.

This is probably the best new product in the last 10 years. Full
Bio 2 cycle mix , also in bar oil that pours at -30°C. Fuel mix
meets and exceeds JASO FD standard.
Here's some pics and attachments.

I hate to bring this up,but what about the toxicity of burning
synthetic oils? I'm just thinking back to a documentary about a
modern jet passenger liner model that was known to have a leaky
oil seal on it's engines,(with synthetic oil)which burned and
pumped toxic fumes into the cabin of passengers, poisoning
some, resulting in big lawsuits... Maybe good ol' castor oil
isn't so bad, smells like cooking French Fries, always makes me
hungry...
None of us ever thought about breathing the fumes... compared to
mineral oil or others.
Whats in it,do we care? I think I would just try to avoid
breathing it in directly, same as most of you.
