038 Mag Tilly Carb with compensator
By: ajdjrn Date: May 1, 2017, 8:06 pm

I have a feeling my Bing has failed me. Saw keeps flooding
terribly. Replacing the carb was cheaper and quicker than
rebuilding the Bing. However, this Tilly knockoff (didn't
realize it was a fake when I ordered it) has the compensator
plate. Now, I have a filter with what appears to be a receptacle
for such a hose but when I install the carb and the filter it
doesn't appear a hose could make that turn. Can anyone provide
pictures or insight on how to make this
work?[IMG]

To install this replacement carburetor in a machine without a
compensator connection on the air filter, remove the end cover
with connecting elbow, and fit in its place an end cover
without connecting elbow.

There once was a time the rebuild kits for the OEM Bing were
only available through Stihl and were rather costly .Oregon
sells them now and a basic kit with just the soft components are
moderately priced .

Sometimes on the 038 Bing the metering lever height was too
high/too low and you cannot bend or adjust the plastic lever.
But the seat the inlet needle seats on is movable, very carefully
with a flat punch you can tap the seat one way or other and get
correct metering lever height.
They were a good carb and ran well.

Mike, I remember my 1st year 038 Magnum I bought in 1985 had a
Bing carb, but the factory recalled the carb and replaced it
with a Walbro.
Story I heard was the German Bing castings couldn't handle our
Canadian gasoline.

If I get time I'll check the two mags I have .I know one has a
Bing but I'm not sure of the other one . If memory serves I
think my 038 AV has a Tillotson .

I just looked at the IPL Tillotson HK42B .FWIW Oregon made the
repair kits for the BIng .I had 4 at one time which were just
the soft components but they made a complete kit which had all
the parts. Google it .

FWIW there are about a dozen rebuild kits on flea bay for a Bing
48 .See how simple that was ;D
